RINGMER FOOTBALL CLUB LTD 1st X1 Division One Match Report Ringmer 2 Chichester CU 4 26/05/08 Match Report by David Ruffles
With nothing to play for except pride both sides fielded a blend of youngsters and experienced old hands. The only difference was that the Chi youngsters had collectively been gaining Division 1 experience since February while the Ringmer youngsters had only a few games at this level between them with four players Dan Davies, Robbie Frost, Louis Munnery and James Earwicker all making their debuts at this level. Ultimately this gap in experience told with Chi looking the more dangerous going forward.
Chichester went ahead in the seventh minute when Mike O’Neill ran through the Ringmer defence to fire home between Dan Davies and his right-hand post. After twenty five minutes Marc Whiteman wriggled through a crowd of players before laying the ball back to Munnery whose low shot forced a diving save from Peter Rice in goal for the visitors. Then seven minutes later Chamal Fenelon ran clear of the Blues defence to beat the advancing Davies from the edge of the penalty area. Moments later Whiteman’s shot was blocked by Rice and Munnery’s first time strike of the loose ball went just over the crossbar. Then a free-kick from Miles Scerri hit the bar and rebounded to Josh Lawrence who headed the ball back into the goal mouth where Whiteman forced the ball home at the second attempt to pull a goal back for the Blues just before half-time.
Frost came on at the start of the second half and almost scored inside a minute with a clever chip over the defence which did not quite come down quickly enough to find the net. Fenelon had two chances to increase Chichester’s lead before the unmarked Frost again saw his shot pass over the bar. Then Russell Hardwell struck twice in six minutes to put Chi three goals in front. First, a weak challenge from Lawrence let Hardwell clear to strike the ball home and the second came when a pass from Alex Ward allowed him to run in from the right and shoot beyond the reach of the advancing Davies. Ringmer came back strongly with Jack Johnson, Whiteman and Amro Shaker all going close to pull a goal back. Then with time running out Shaker fired through a crowded penalty area to score Ringmer’s second goal of the match.
