Match Report by David Ruffles

Ringmer’s poor run of form continued on Saturday with a defeat against high-flying East Preston. There were, however, some positives for the Blues to take away from this performance namely an outstanding display at the back from young Will Broomfield and a promising debut from another newly signed youngster Jo Jo Tubon.

Indeed Tubon came close to making a dream start with a shot on the turn which went just over the bar in the fourth minute. Joe Dryer also went close with a similar shot before the Blues took the lead in the tenth minute when Marc Whiteman laid the ball into the path of Luke Gedling who chipped the ball over the advancing keeper and into the net. However inside a minute the scores were level when Paul Brown ran through the Ringmer defence for an equalising goal which many thought should have been ruled offside. A minute later a cross from Nick Barden came off a defender’s head to fall at the feet of a surprised Whiteman who put his close range effort over the bar. By now the play was flowing from end to end with both sides playing attractive football and creating a host of chances. Tubon and Broomfield both had shots blocked by Tom Rand in the home goal while at the other end Kevin Budge beat Joe Adams to the ball only for Ryan MacMillan to clear off the line. A quick break out of defence by Ringmer involving Dan Evans, Gedling and Whiteman ended with Evans shooting straight at Rand. Then Budge ran across the edge of the Ringmer penalty area before turning the ball past the diving Joe Adams to give the home side the lead after twenty five minutes.

The second half followed a similar pattern with chances created at both ends as the two sides continued to search for goals. Both defences held firm with Adams, Broomfield and Dave Soutar starring at the back for Ringmer while Ringmer’s attacks brought the best out of Tom Rand and Jay Head whose head seemed to attract any ball in the air. The half began with Gedling and East Preston’s Tom Lawley both inches off target while Whiteman and Tubon both had shots straight into the arms of Rand. Mark Price then hit the post for Ringmer. At the other end Adams had to use his feet to block shots from Budge and James Rhodes before Rand did exactly the same to deny Whiteman. Then deep into stoppage time it took a flying save from Rand to keep out a powerful strike from Whiteman which had seemed destined to salvage a well-deserved point for the Blues.
