RINGMER FOOTBALL CLUB LTD 1st X1 Friendly Match Report Ringmer 1 Horsham YMCA 3 Friendly 28/07/07 Report by David Ruffles
Ringmer started this match with only one change from last week’s starting line-up with Glen Matten replacing Andy Hart at right back. For the second game in a row the Blues took the lead in the third minute when a cross from Nick Barden was met at the near post by Marc Whiteman with a glancing header. Ringmer continued to make good use of their possession and made the visitors look a very ordinary side in the first half. However they were unable to convert this possession into further goals. The closest the visitors came to snatching an equaliser in the first half were when Matt May had to react quickly to spread himself at the feet of an opposition forward before he could get in a shot. Otherwise, the Blues defence tamed the YM attack for most of the half.
However it was a different story in the second half. Both sides making frequent use of substitutions to try out different formations and personnel there was little continuity and little pattern to the play. Nevertheless the visitors managed to raise their game with much more pace upfront which unsettled the Blues defence. Although YM ultimately scored three goals they were more due to defensive lapses and assistance from the woodwork rather than any creative movement from the visitors. The first came after fifty five minutes when a long through ball was latched onto by a suspiciously offside forward whose shot across the face of the goal found the net via the far post. Then ten minutes later poor defending allowed YM a free close range header from a corner and although the first attempt hit the bar the rebound was headed into the net. Five minutes later the Blues defence was all over the place leaving May with no chance to prevent a third goal. Aaron MacMillan had a late chance to pull a goal back but he lost out when one-on-one with the keeper who blocked his shot with his feet.
In the end the result flattered the visitors with the home side, on the strength of a fine first half performance, worthy of a draw.
