RINGMER FOOTBALL CLUB LTD 1st X1 Brighton Charity Cup R1 Match Report Mile Oak 4 Ringmer 4 (after extra time) Ringmer win 5-3 on penalties 05/03/08 Match report by David Ruffles
It was an unfamiliar Ringmer side that took the field for Wednesday’s Brighton Charity Cup tie against Mile Oak. Five of the starting line up had only limited first team experience (and four of those had also played the full ninety minutes the night before for Ringmer Reserves) with a further near novice on the bench. So it is perhaps not surprising that the Danny Curd gave the home side the lead as early as the eighth minute. However ten minutes later Marc Whiteman set up Kieran Patel to level the scores. The scores remained level at half time but in a dramatic opening five minutes the Oak opened up a two goal advantage with goals from Jason Fleming and Wayne Whittington. Danny McLaughlin pulled a goal back for Ringmer five minutes later before the introduction of James Novis in place of Jack Johnson changed the completion of the game. He almost scored with his first touch but two minutes later he put Ringmer back on level terms when he fired home the equaliser following a cross from Nick Barden. The remaining thirty minutes belonged almost entirely to Ringmer with McLaughlin, Whiteman, Gedling all going close to putting the result beyond doubt. The closest either side came to a goal was in the eighty fifth minute when Marc Whiteman’s penalty kick was turned round the post by Aaron Stenning in the Oak goal.
Ringmer went ahead midway through the second period of extra time when a header from James Novis caused panic in the Oak’s goalmouth before Marc Whiteman forced the ball home. However the Oak equalised a minute later to take the game into a penalty shoot out. Joe Adams, Andy Hart, MacMillan, Whiteman and Gedling all scored for the Blues with Adams crucially saving the third of the Oak’s spot kicks to secure a place in the semi final for Ringmer.
