2nd X1 Reserve Division East Match Report

Ringmer Res 6 - 1 Bexhill Utd Res

24/08/07

Report by M& S Crouch

An air of anticipation swept around the ground as Ringmer's new Reserve side took to the field for the start of the first reserve match of the season. After last seasons disappointing campaign from the reserves, gaining relegation back down to the East Division, almost every player in that team left to try their luck elsewhere. There has been a great deal of work going on behind the scenes by U18's manager Bob Munnery and coach Steve Oliver to get a squad ready to play at this level from their Youth members, many of whom have had little or no experiance of senior football.

Ringmer kicked of an immediately Bexhill went on the attack, pushing up and getting in the first shot after only a minute, keeper and captain for this match Matt May, easily cleared down field and pushed the Blues out quickly to respond. Ringmer settled quickly with good movement down the field. Ringmer were awarded a free kick some 20yds out, this was taken by Joe Dryer who expertly curled the ball around the wall which deflected off the woodwork for the Blues first goal.

Ringmer controlled this half from there on and had a multitude of chances with shots going just wide and from corner kicks. Bexhill found it very hard to get themselves out of their own half at times but when they did they then had a hard time getting anything on goal. The visitors did however have a spell on attack around the 20 min mark, pushing through the defence and testing keeper May's blocking abilities to the full. The Blues quickly regained control and were again piling in shots, Dryer almost getting his second after hitting the post from another free kick. A last minute scare for the Blues came after Bexhill tried one last quick push up field on the left which caught Ringmer napping, the attack ran past a lone defender and shot across goal which May pushed out to clear only for another shot to speed back towards goal, fortunately the ball glanced off the upright to be cleared by Ringmer.

The second half and Ringmer gain another free kick, from twenty yards, this again beats the wall but just shaves the post. A few minutes later another free kick this time taken by Keiron Patel who floated the ball over to have Chris Shoult head it in for Ringmer's second. A few minutes later another shot rattled the visitors post. The relentless attack by Ringmer never stopped and inevitably a third goal came on 68 mins after Ryan Storrie, who had come on for Patel, blasted a shot in from the left into the bottom right of the net, minutes later Bexhill keeper had to push away another shot from Storrie. After 79 mins Dryer picked up a through ball and tore through the visitors defence on the right to bang in goal four.

It wasn't until around the 80th minute that Bexhill claimed a goal after Ringmer left May open forcing him to come out to close the attacker down, but the player eluded Matty's efforts to score their only goal, seconds later it seemed Ringmer were incensed by the fact that Matty had blotted his clean sheet and immediately scored again with this time Ryan Betsworth beating the defence and planting goal five, a few minutes later Chris Shoult headed in from a corner for number six.

With tonight s performance, Ringmer can rest assured that we do have a Reserve team with the capabilities of holding their own at this level. It showed them strong and imaginative in midfield and good scoring abilities up front the defence worked hard and kept most attacks at bay, overall a great effort by all, even Captain May who's relentless command of the Blues from between the sticks certainly ruled the night. When asked after the game how he thought it went, Captain May said “Tonights match was a promising start for a young side, There were good individual performances all around the field and this the team will be able to build on throughout the season”

Note,

We have tried to give a supporters view of this match (not a technical one) and hope it is a true reflection of the game.
