St Francis Flyers 1st XI 3 - 0 Ringmer 2nd XI

On paper this was a great 2nd XI team to field for this match against St Francis Flyers and pre-match confidence was high among the Ringmer squad. But once again, the young age of the Ringmer 2nd XI (average age only 17) counted against them in the first half as St Francis were determined to make the full weight of their physical advantage felt early on, with some strong challenges.

 

With the eight enforced changes to the squad for this fixture, the match followed a very similar sequence of events to that of the previous week’s cup game at Hassocks, with Ringmer conceding two early goals as they got used to playing alongside each other. St Francis opened their scoring in the 2nd minute and again in the 6th minute.

 

In the 22nd minute Bob Munnery made some tactical changes bringing Hawkes on at Right Wing, which allowed the versatile Sowter to drop back to help out the Ringmer defence at Centre Back. Ringmer now started to play their fast moving football and the physical difference between the two sides seemed unimportant and Ringmer concluded the first half, by far the better side.

The second half saw Ringmer playing some of their best football, having an easy 80% of the possession and creating lots of chances. The St Francis defence were forced into simply booting the ball clear whenever they regained possession, prevented from creating any significant counterattack. Despite good efforts on goal from Gray, Frost, Hawkes and Munnery, Ringmer couldn’t reduce the deficit. (Gray’s best effort ricocheting off the crossbar in the 63rd minute.) St Francis put the game out of Ringmer’s reach scoring their third goal against the run of play in the 85th minute as Ringmer lost possession of the ball as they pressed forward once again to attack the St Francis goal.
