2nd X1 Reserve Division East Match Report

Lingfield 2nd XI – 1 v 5 – Ringmer 2nd XI

01/05/08

Match Report by Rob Hawkes

WE ARE UP!!!!!!!!

After a season of sparkling league and cup performances the Ringmer 2nd XI finally got what they deserved tonight and secured their promotion back into the Reserves Premier Division.

With clear blue skies and the absence of standing water, the Lingfield pitch could not have looked more different to the sight that greeted us on Tuesday night. Neither could Lingfield’s 2nd XI, now strengthened with 6 regular front side players meant the point needed from this rescheduled fixture was going to be more than a formality for the Ringmer lads seeking promotion. Having said that Ringmer looked comfortably in control from the first whistle, playing some superb intricate football. Rob Frost had two early chances, the first coming from a long Joe Dryer throw in which found Rob on the edge of the six yard box, but Rob’s volley just skimmed the cross bar. His second attempt a few minutes later followed a fumbled save from Joe Dryer’s strike which the keeper parried out as far as Rob, but his shot hit the keeper in the face and bouncing out to safety.

Josh Lawrence opened Ringmer’s account in the 21st minute connecting with a well delivered corner (again from Dryer) to head home into the net. Joe continued to have a very busy first half, claiming a penalty kick awarded by Mr Cole awarded in the 43rd minute when Sam Sowter was brought down by the Lingfield keeper. Unfortunately Joe’s blistering strike landed somewhere in East Grinstead rather than the back of the net.

On the stroke of half time Rob gave Ringmer a well deserved 2 goal cushion when he broke through the LFC defence this time to slot the ball past the keeper to make the half time score 0 – 2.

Ringmer started the second half in the same manner they concluded the first. Rob Frost again on target in the 48th minute after Aaron MacMillan who had an excellent game, fired in a pinpoint pass to find Rob in space on the edge of the LFC area. Part way into the half Bob and Steve made a couple of substitutions replacing Louis Munnery in midfield with Josh Hawkes and Sam Sowter up front with Amro shaker. With a three goal lead Ringmer relaxed a little and Lingfield quickly punished them with a looping lob from wide right which Jack had no chance of reaching. Four minutes later the two Ringmer substitutes linked up to restore the three goal cushion: Amro’s initial strike being blocked by the keeper, but Josh Hawkes following in, was on the spot to put away the rebound. On 73 minutes Joe Dryer saw his free kick tipped onto the cross bar to be once again denied a goal, but on 75 minutes Jayson Sowter rounded off an excellent performance at centre back with a well taken header to bag Ringmer’s fifth and final goal to put the result and ultimate promotion beyond doubt.

Tonight’s 2nd XI performance was characteristic of Ringmer’s performances all season. It was entertaining, competitive and technically brilliant from a young and promising squad spurred on by the indomitable pairing of Bob Munnery and Steve Oliver.
