RINGMER FOOTBALL CLUB LTD 2nd X1 Reserve Division East Match Report Ringmer Res 4 - 3 Newhaven Res 21/09/07 Report by Rob Hawkes
This was another high tempo game with the pace being dictated by the young Ringmer 2nd XI team. What they may have lost out to Newhaven physically, they certainly made up for in pace, ability and character.
Ringmer went ahead early in the game, when in 14th minute Scott Taylor broke down the left wing on one his many blistering runs in the first half. Scott linking up with Robbie Frost threaded the ball through to Kieron Patel who floated a beautifully weighted chip over the keeper in to the Newhaven net. This was champagne football that was worth the entrance fee alone. All £2.50 of it!! Seven minutes later Ryan Betsworth shot just wide of the left hand post after another rapid break started by Taylor (who had an excellent first half). A minute later Ryan’s persistence was rewarded as Kieron Patel’s cross found him in the box. Ryan side footed the ball to the right of the Newhaven keeper to make it 2 – 0 to the home side. (Ryan wished it to be known that he dedicated his goal to the memory of his Granddad George Briggs who passed away last week.)
Further chances fell to both sides, but it was Newhaven who always looked dangerous up front, that managed to capitalise on their chance in the 44th minute to bring the half time score to 2 – 1.
The second half started with changes for Ringmer: Captain Aaron Last had to retire following a first half injury was replaced by Chris Shoult at Centre Back and Josh Hawkes picking up the captain’s arm band for the first time.
Several early chances for Ringmer resulted in a goal for Robbie Frost in the 53rd minute, who deftly controlled a long ball to chip the Newhaven keeper for the second time in the game, to put the home side 3 – 1 up. Ten minutes later Newhaven were allowed to get back into the game with a second goal: Mr Ledbetter considered a challenge on Ringmer’s Centre Back, Elliot Finney to be a fair one, despite the fact that Elliott was left writhing on the ground in agony. It wasn’t until Newhaven had run through the gap left by the felled Finney and scored, that he was allowed to receive treatment. Newhaven continued to pressure the Ringmer defence and drew level in the 73rd minute with a looping lob from their right midfield.
Ringmer maintained their discipline throughout the game despite repeated setbacks and were finally rewarded when James Novis, keeping his composure in front of goal, scored what turned out to be their winning goal in the 88th minute.
After an enjoyable game Steve Johnson congratulated the boys on an entertaining game of football, but more importantly on a quality performance and for the strength of character they showed.
