2nd X1 Reserve Division East Match Report

Pease Pottage 2nd XI – 2 v 10 – Ringmer 2nd XI

19/04/08

Match Report by Rob Hawkes

Anyone knowing these two sides would not have bet against the eventual outcome, given the difficulties Pease Pottage have been going through recently and Ringmer’s determined push for promotion. What was surprising though was Ringmer’s willingness to give Pease Pottage a two goal lead.

PPFC’s first goal came in the 9th minute when Player Manager Joe Paton skinned a Ringmer defender 34 years his junior and pinged in a great cross which was finished clinically. Their second came in the 14th minute from the penalty spot after Josh Lawrence was adjudged to have fouled inside the area. At this point there might have been a collective realisation that Ringmer were going to have to work harder to get the result they needed from this fixture.

There then ensued another long list of Ringmer goals…

2 - 1 (Grey: 25mins) – Sam Sowter ran through clear on goal and was brought down by the PP keeper. Mr Cole awarded Ringmer the spot kick which was duly despatched by Captain Jamie Gray.

2 - 2 (Munnery: 29mins) – Louis Munnery chased down and won a long ball being seen out for a goal kick by the PP Centre Back, cutting back inside Louis’ finish was clinical from a difficult angle. A great goal, which really started Ringmer’s renaissance in this game.

2 - 3 (Frost: 37mins) – Josh Lawrence fed an excellent ball down the left wing for Rob to run onto and fire past the keeper beating him at the near post.

2 - 4 (Novis: 43mins) – 43 minutes into the game and 17 years, 3 months and 22 days after he was born James Novis scored his first ever goal with his head!! It’s always good to get these things out of the way because they can start to worry a player.

2 - 5 (Frost: 48mins) – Rob’s first strike from about 12 yards out was blocked by the keeper, but he found the net with his second attempt.

(At this point PPFC were reduced to 10 men through injury and a lack of subs.)

2 - 6 (Novis: 72mins) – Ben Ruth’s attempt was blocked by the PP keeper but the rebound came out to James Novis who had time to chip the ball up and volley it home.

2 - 7 (Patel: 78mins) – Kieran’s goal, like the two that preceded it came from a rebounded shot which Ringmer were first to get to. This time it was Kieran who spun and fired past the keeper to make it seven.

2 - 8 (Novis: 84mins) – James needed every inch of his 50” inside leg measurement to reach this ball, which he just managed to sneak inside the bottom of the left hand goal post with the deftest of toe pokes.

(At this point the valiant PPFC were reduced to 9 men through further injury and no subs.)

2 - 9 (Novis: 88mins) – James was getting really busy up front 17 years, 3 months and 22 days after he was born, he scored his second ever goal with his head, just to prove it wasn’t a once in a life time thing 45 minutes earlier.

2 - 10 (Grey: 90+3mins) – Jamie rounded off Ringmer’s afternoon’s work thumping home a Ben Ruth corner to make the final tally 2 – 10 in Ringmer’s favour.

This wasn’t a pretty game of football by any stretch of the imagination. Ringmer were not at their best and neither were Pease Pottage. However, Joe Paton, Pease Pottage’s Player Manager, would have to get my vote for man of the match, showing a level of leadership and commitment to his club that was commendable, despite all the odds.
