RINGMER FOOTBALL CLUB LTD 2nd X1 Vernon Wentworth Cup Match Report
PEACEHAVEN & TELSCOMBE 2nd XI 1 - 4 RINGMER 2nd X1 20/10/07 Report by Rob Hawkes
This was the proverbial “game of two halves”. Well it certainly must have seemed so from Peacehaven’s perspective anyway. Ringmer had a number of forced changes in their line up with Betsworth, Last and Greatwich all unavailable for selection.
Ringmer dominated possession in the first half, playing some good, fast moving, one touch football. Kieron Patel opened Ringmer’s scoring in the 12th minute when Rob Frost latching on to a Ringmer throw in, deep in the Peacehaven half, laid the ball back for Kieron to slot the ball through the crowded 6yrd box, into the back of the net.
Kieron returned the favour for Rob by setting up the first of his 3 goals, by sending a probing diagonal ball behind the Peacehaven defence, which was pinged back across their goal mouth by Taylor for Rob Frost to tap in from close range. Three minutes later Rob made it 0 – 3, finishing off a goal mouth scramble again from close range.
With only a minute to go before half time Rob got his third in 8 minutes as a deflected Josh Lawrence shot fell to his feet, on the edge of the 6yrd box leaving him the relatively simple job of putting it past the keeper, which he did emphatically.
Peacehaven started the second half determined not to roll over and take another beating, but came out fighting. However, Ringmer were every bit a match for the home side and despite their tactic of trying to man mark Hawkes and Grey out of the game in midfield, Ringmer continued to play an effective passing game creating numerous chances.
With the game effectively won Bob made his three substitutions to rest the U18s scheduled to play the next day. Shortly after this Josh Lawrence had to leave the field of play injured. Why doesn’t that sort of thing happen before you make all your substitutions? Anyway, Ringmer had to play out the last 20 minutes with only ten men and Peacehaven eventually made their advantage count, scoring a consolation goal in the 79th minute.
All in all this was a solid, confident performance by the Ringmer 2nd XI that sees them safely through to the next round of this competition.
