2nd X1 Reserve Division East Match Report

Ringmer 2nd XI 10 v 1 Pease Pottage 2nd XI

08/03/08

Match Report by Rob Hawkes

This afternoon’s performance from Ringmer’s 2nd XI was another excellent display of quality fast moving intricate football culminating in their second highest score of the season. Such was the quality of the football played, that visiting supporters wanted to know how many first team players were being fielded, but this was as regular a 2nd XI line up as Ringmer could field. Their dominance throughout the 90 minutes was total and some of the interplay that led up to the goals was a real delight to watch.

I have learnt from previous high scoring games that it is worth checking with the referee after the game that you agree on the final goal tally. We agreed and a description of each goal follows, but for each player who got his name onto the score sheet there were ten team mates who worked tirelessly and brilliantly to get them there. Not least of all Aaron Last who is always top quality at Centre back and working alongside Josh Lawrence they make a formidable pairing that would grace any County side.

So to the Ringmer goals…

1st Goal (Ryan Betsworth 8 mins) – Jamie Gray headed back a goal kick from the halfway line. Betsworth ran on to it and fired into the left hand side netting.

2nd Goal (Jayson Sowter 15 mins) – Jayson’s tap in at the back post concluded one of the nicest moves of the game with some exquisite interplay through midfield between Hawkes, Greatwich & Taylor before Sam Sowter fizzed the ball across goal mouth for his brother to tap in.

3rd Goal (Josh Hawkes 19 mins) – It was a Simon Greatwich pass that set Josh up for a 20 yard strike from the right hand side of the penalty area, which he took well curling he ball just inside the far post.

4th Goal (Sam Sowter 26 mins) – Hawkes took a short corner to Gray who picked out Sam waiting in the 6 yard box who fired into the roof of the net from close range.

5th Goal (Simon Greatwich 40 mins) – Simon was awarded a free kick after being felled just out side the Pease Pottage penalty area which he executed perfectly, curling the ball over the wall into the roof of the net, giving the keeper no chance of stopping it.

6th Goal (Ryan Betsworth 43 mins) – Ryan was set up by Dan Davis’s long kick. Ryan rounded the keeper and calmly tapped home to conclude the first half’s goal fest.

Pease Pottage Kicked off the second half and set about restricting Ringmer’s free flowing football. It took Ringmer a little while to get going again and we had to wait for a full 14 minutes before they found the net again.

7th Goal (Ryan Betsworth 59 mins) – Jayson Sowter picked out Ryan who was lurking just inside the 18 yard box. Ryan’s first swing at the ball didn’t connect but quickly adjusting his position he deftly chipped the keeper to get his hat trick.

8th Goal (Ryan Betsworth 66 mins) – Fantastic build up play from Simon Greatwich who zigzagged his way to the by-line before cutting back across the goal mouth for Ryan to tap in at the back post.

9th Goal (Jamie Gray 69 mins) – Jamie Gray will tell you his volley from the “D” on the edge of the 18 yard box was the goal of the afternoon. It was a spectacular strike, but there were a few contenders for that accolade this afternoon.

10th Goal (Ryan Betsworth 77 mins) – Ryan seems to have got the final touch to a goal mouth scramble where half the player on the pitch seemed to get a foot to the ball except Jayson Sowter who spotted a hand ball somewhere in the mêlée and was remonstrating with the ref as Ryan put the ball over the line for the last time this afternoon.

Just prior to Ringmer’s 10th goal going in Pease Pottage sought to spoil our afternoon in the 73rd minute as their no.10 broke through and chipped Dan for a consolation goal. It shows how despite being on the receiving end of an unpleasant thumping this afternoon, they never gave up and never lost their discipline. Mr Tasker also had a very good game this afternoon.
