2nd X1 Reserve Division East Match Report

RINGMER 2ND X1 3 - 1 RYE UNITED 2ND X1

05/01/08

Match Report by Rob Hawkes

Ringmer fielded a starting XI with 5 changes to the team that faced Rye back in late October. Jack Stern made his first appearance in a Ringmer shirt as Matt May, the regular 2nd XI keeper, was unavailable for selection today. Ringmer kicked off the first half and from the off both teams battled hard in the middle third, but created only a few chances on goal.

Ringmer started to gain the upper hand in the last ten minutes of the first half and their hard work and endeavour was finally rewarded with a goal, two minutes into injury time when Josh Hawkes’s angled pass found Patel on the left wing; who finished with characteristic aplomb by floating a shot over the keeper’s head, into the top right hand corner of the net.

Rye came out fighting in the second half and immediately put Ringmer under pressure, but the lads soaked it up well and quickly regained the ascendancy. The Centre Back pairing of Last and Finney did a fantastic job of mopping up every testing ball that Rye tried to feed through to their strikers.

Bob and Steve made an early substitution, replacing Ben Ruth with James Novis on 49 minutes.

In the 69th minute a deflected cross resulted in a Ringmer corner, which was driven in by Novis and headed home emphatically by Jayson Sowter to give Ringmer a more comfortable 2 – 0 lead. Two minutes later another Novis corner was met by Sowter, but this time he was unlucky to only hit the crossbar. On 75 minutes Rob Frost extended Ringer’s lead when he ran on to a through ball from Jesse Stonell to fire past the Rye keeper to make it 3 – 0.

Bob & Steve made their final substitution in the 78th minute replacing Jesse Stonell in midfield with Louis Munnery.

Rye managed a consolation goal 1 minute from time when Ringmer who were relaxed and comfortable in possession, made an unforced and uncharacteristic error at the back, which allowed the very quick Rye No.11 to run through and fire past the unprotected Stern.

With the exception of this one mistake it was a very positive and enthralling performance from the Ringmer 2nd XI this afternoon, who showed their strength, ability and quality all over the park as they extended their unbeaten run in this league to ten games.

The other person worth mentioning is Mr Lawson, whose excellent referring today meant he went largely unnoticed throughout the game, which is how it should always be. Thank you.
