2nd X1 Reserve Division East Match Report

Ringmer 2nd XI - 1 v 4 St. Francis Rangers

01/03/08

Match Report by Rob Hawkes

With their last two matches postponed this was the 2nd XI’s first game since their victory at Barnham in the Sussex Intermediate Cup Quarter final, two weeks ago.

Ringmer started brightly and looked the stronger side initially, creating a number of chances early on. Jamie Gray opened the scoring in the 31st minute when Stonell picked the ball up on the edge of the St FR penalty area. He threaded a pass through to Patel who flicked an overhead chip to Gray who was waiting on the penalty spot to fire home into the bottom right hand corner of the net.

The first half concluded with a series of St FR corners and goal mouth scrambles. One attempt hit the Ringmer woodwork but ricocheted out to safety. Ringmer hung on to their slender lead and were probably relieved to hear the half time whistle

Bob and Steve were forced into a half time substitution bringing on Jack Sewell for James Earwicker who was unable to resume his duties at left back for the second half. Within 3 minutes of the restart, StFR scored their equaliser, heading in another corner kick.

In the 57th minute Bob & Steve replaced Josh Hawkes with Louis Munnery in midfield, then two minutes later were forced into another substitution when Jack Stern had to retire injured. Ryan Betsworth pulled on the keeper’s jumper and Ryan Storrie came on up front.

Detecting a weakness in our defence StFR piled on the pressure and within 5 minutes had taken the lead when Betsworth did well to save a shot with his feet (typical outfield player!) but only knocked it out to another StFR player to drive home from close range. StFR added a 3rd goal in the 80th minute and a 4th in the 84th minute.

Looking to rub salt into our wounds Mr Caroll awarded StFR an injury time penalty after Sewell brought down one of their players. There will be two accounts of this penalty kick: one from the very busy Betsworth who would say his goal keeping prowess came to the fore as his lightening reflexes catapulted him into the path of the ball to make a Schmeichel-esque goal line save. The other account would be from everyone else watching who saw a numpty scuffed shot bobble towards Ryan and hit him on the knee as he knelt down to scoop it up. Either way it spared us a few more blushes so well done Ryan!

Needless to say it was a bad day at the office, with a well organised StFR finishing strongly as Ringmer became weakened through injury.
