RINGMER FOOTBALL CLUB LTD 2nd X1 SCFA Intermediate Cup Match Report RINGMER 2ND X1 4 - 1 SOUTH BERSTED FC 19/01/08 Match Report by Rob Hawkes
This game got underway at the second time of asking on a remarkably good Caburn surface, having been postponed last Saturday due to a water logged pitch. The Reserves put in another talented and convincing performance that was exciting and entertaining to watch (as always), but most importantly sees them through to the next round of this competition.
Ringmer took an early lead as Rob Frost won the ball in the middle of the park and chipped it forward for Jamie Gray to run onto. Jamie seemed to be felled from behind inside the Bersted penalty area, but somehow still managed to get the ball into the back of the net. Probably not the prettiest goal we’ve seen this season, but an important one as it allowed Ringmer to settle and start to play their own style of football and take control of the game.
Ten minutes later Jack Johnson doubled Ringmer’s lead when Patel’s close range header was saved by the Bersted keeper, but in so doing only parried it out to the waiting Johnson who fired home from 6 yards.
Such was Ringmer’s control of the first half that South Bersted didn’t manage a shot on goal until the 32nd minute. The half concluded 2 – 0 to the Reserves, who looked comfortably in control and favourites to progress to the next round. Whether it was this sense of being in complete control that brought a very relaxed Ringmer out for the second half or a particularly inspirational half time talk (read roasting) for South Bersted, but the roles were reversed for the second half. Ringmer were unable to get going and found themselves pressed back deep into their own half as Bersted piled on the pressure. But Ringmer’s defence was steadfast and resilient and soaked up the pressure.
In the 64th minute Bob & Steve elected to freshen things up by making their only substitution of the game, bringing on Louis Munnery for Josh Hawkes in midfield.
Ringmer’s lead was further extended in the 69th minute, this time by Frost who was provided with an excellent diagonal ball by Patel, who threaded his cross field ball in behind Bersted’s left back. Rob’s blistering pace gave him the advantage and beating the defender to the ball, blasted past the out stretched keeper to make it 3 – 0.
Bersted’s response was immediate, when a minute later Mr Bulchin overruled Lee Cramp flagging for offside and awarded them a very dubious goal. (For future reference, should any referees or prospective opposition read this report, please note that to our occasional frustration, Lee Cramp is as straight as a die. He has never to my knowledge given us “favours”. He may travel with the team to games, but is consistently impartial and unbiased and would rather walk home rather than give a partisan decision. SO WHEN LEE FLAGS OFFSIDE, YOU CAN PUT YOUR MORTGAGE ON THE FACT HE’S GOT IT RIGHT!!) Well Mr Bulchin thought otherwise and South Bersted benefited: 3 – 1.
The game was put beyond doubt in the 81st minute when Rob Frost, tearing down the right wing, pinged a ball to the back post to be met by the on rushing Patel and Johnson, but it was Patel that connected to make the final score a very convincing 4 -1.
This was another creditable performance by the 2nd XI who dominated the first half, soaked up a lot of pressure in the early stages of the second half to eventually finish on top as very deserving winners.
