UPPER BEEDING 1st XI 1 - 2 RINGMER 2nd X1

On an afternoon of high profile international matches, Ringmer’s 2nd XI trip to Upper Beeding FC to compete in the SCFA Intermediate Cup may not have been a headline grabbing fixture, but it was a very enjoyable and good natured game to watch, with both teams keen to play good football on a warm and sunny October afternoon.

 

From the first whistle Ringmer took control of this match, completely dominating possession and leaving Upper Beeding struggling to put together any moves to trouble the Ringmer defence. Ryan Storrie opened the scoring for Ringmer in the 23rd minute, latching on to a diagonal ball from Joe Dryer on the edge of the UB penalty area. Feigning to strike with his first touch allowed him to dodge past their defence and tuck the ball away past the on rushing keeper. Unfortunately the keeper couldn’t stop his brave attempt to close down Ryan and when his jaw met Ryan’s knee, he came off second best and had to leave the field of play unable to continue.

 

With a second choice keeper between the sticks for UB and Ringmer’s domination in midfield it looked like we would be in for a goal fest, but it wasn’t to be. UB’s defence did a great job of protecting their new keeper.

 

Early in the second half Bob made the only substitution of the game for Ringmer, bringing on Hawkes for the goal scorer: Storrie (54)

 

Despite numerous good attempts on goal from Gray, Patel, Dryer and Betsworth it wasn’t until Greatwich was brought down in the UB penalty area that Ringmer extended their lead in the 81st minute from the resultant penalty kick, which was expertly put away by the Ringmer Captain: Greatwich.

 

Upper Beeding continued to push forward and eventually monopolised on a defensive mistake, halving the Ringmer lead in the 86th minute, but Ringmer kept their discipline, their shape and possession of the ball to run out winners and progress to the next round. Well done!
