RINGMER FOOTBALL CLUB LTD 2nd X1 Reserve Division East Match Report Ringmer Res 2 - 2 Wealden Res 14/09/07 Report by Rob Hawkes
There were some old and new faces battling it out at the Caburn tonight when the Wealden 2nd XI assisted by some old Ringmer players took on the predominantly new looking and youthful Ringmer 2nd XI.
The first real chance fell to Wealden when they broke through the Ringmer back four and Matt May was quick off his line to win the one on one and clear the danger.
Ringmer’s midfield worked hard against a very physical Wealden XI and created a number of good chances that ended up just wide of the target. First blood went to Wealden though in the 20th minute when the ball was fired across the Ringmer goal mouth to be tapped in at close range. Ringmer’s response was immediate when 3 minutes later the Wealden keeper failed to keep hold of a blistering shot from Andy Hart following a clever short free kick laid off by Elliot Finney levelling the score at 1 – 1.
Further good chances fell to Davies, Lawrence and Storrie but the score remained level at half time.
Ringmer changed their striking line up at half time starting the second half with Sam Sowter up front in place of Ryan Betsworth. Ringmer continued to put pressure on the Wealden defence for the next 20 minutes forcing them into conceding a number of free kicks and a handful of yellow cards. But the game wasn’t one sided and Wealden created a lot of chances trying to capitalise on their aerial strength. This called for some brave defending and it would be remiss of me not to mention Aaron Last in particular at this point who had an exceptional game at centre back.
Ringmer took the lead in the 78th minute when Matt Davies headed in an Andy Wilkinson cross at the far post to make it 2 -1. However, the lead was short lived as Wealden replied four minutes later as the Ringmer defence were unable to clear their lines and the ball found its way into their net.
The game was fast, physical and entertaining to watch. The evening was only marred by persistent insults and criticisms coming from some of the Wealden bench which were levelled at Ringmer players and match officials. They had obviously not heard the proverb: “Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt”. I am pleased to say that tonight, without exception, the Ringmer players and bench chose to be judged on their football alone. Thank you.
