RINGMER FOOTBALL CLUB LTD 1st X1 Friendly Match Report Saltdean 0 Ringmer 1 07/08/07 Report by David Ruffles
The start of the match was delayed by some ten minutes while the groundsman repaired a hole in the pitch. However the grass was long and the pitch was heavily rutted. In view of the conditions avoidance of injury was a top priority.
There were a few early scares for the Blues defence but in truth Joe Adams in the Ringmer goal never had to make a save during the whole match as the Blues new back four of Andy Hart, Dave Soutar, Sam Adams and Dan Evans grew in confidence as the match progressed. After eight minutes Danny McLaughlin and Aaron MacMillan combined to set up a chance for Nick Barden whose shot was inches wide. Then a free kick from Evans curled just over the far post. On twenty minutes a cross from Luke Gedling was headed against the bar by Ryan MacMillan with his brother Aaron following up to blast the rebound into the net.
Ringmer dictated the play for the remainder of the half with intricate passing movements that denied the home side possession for long periods. Ryan MacMillan impressed in an unfamiliar mid-field role where his defensive experience helped snuff out any potential threats from the home side. Aaron MacMillan almost increased Ringmer’s lead just before half-time when he beat the keeper to a long through ball only to see a defender run back to clear his shot off the line.
The second half saw the introduction of a number of former Ringmer players into the Saltdean ranks with Stuart Corlett first to make his mark with a crude tackle which saw Aaron MacMillan limp off the field. From the resulting free kick Norbert Sule’s shot went just over the bar. Andy Hunt was making inroads into the home defence with some telling crosses from the right with Barden and Sule off target. By now veteran Paul Thomsett and Matt May were operating as twin strikers. As the game drew to a mix-up in the Blues defence created an opening for a Saltdean equaliser but forward shot wide.
