SEAFORD 1 RINGMER 2

SEAFORD TOWN 1 - 2 RINGMER

01/03/08

Match Report by Richard Soan

Ringmer moved onto Round 2 of this Competition against their County League Division 2 opponents. However, recent weeks Seaford have been in a rich vain of form winning 7 out of their last 8 games and hoping to cause an upset especially with Duncan Kneller the Seaford Manager being a former Ringmer player himself.

Unfortunately the game did not live up to the expectations of a Local Cup-Tie and was played with a bitterly strong easterly wind, which did nothing to help improve good footballing conditions.

All to often both sides gave the ball away in mid-field, which created a scrappy affair. However, in saying that, Ringmer totally dominated the first 45 minutes with the strong wind at their backs but both sides went in level at half time 1 – 1.

Ringmer’s goal was scored by the Blue’s Goal Machine Mark Whiteman following for once some exceptional two-touch football from Defence to Mid-field and it was Nick Barden’s final pass that found Whiteman unmarked in the box to score past Lamin Faal in the Home Goal.

Various chances were created by the Blues with Dryer, McLaughlin, and Gedling all going close. Then on 42 minutes against the run of play a rare Seaford attack resulted in Souter giving away a free kick some 30 yards from goal, from which Adam Kneller’s excellent cross into the box found the head of Ben Dartnall at the far post to score easily and put the scores level.

The second half was a similar affair to that of the first. However, with the strong wind at their backs Seaford cam more into the game but poor passing was again their biggest downfall. Chances were created at both ends but neither Goalkeeper was forced into making a serious save. Ringmer eventually broke the deadlock after 70 minutes when the unfortunate Mark Doherty turned Danny McLaughlin shot into his own net.

Adam Kneller nearly levelled for Seaford some 5 minutes later with a cleverly taken free kick, which clipped the cross bar with Joe Adams in the Ringmer Goal beaten. Then on 80 minutes Whiteman should have scored a third for Ringmer when he cleverly beat the offside trap but with only Faal to beat, he shot side.

Ringmer now play Mile Oak in Round 2 and hopefully an improved performance will see them make further progress in this competition, which they have never won.
