RINGMER FOOTBALL CLUB LTD 1st X1 Division One Match Report Ringmer 4 Selsey 2 20/10/07 Report by David Ruffles
The first of three League fixtures in eight days ended with Ringmer securing their first League win for a month after a sequence of mostly Cup fixtures. Neither side allowed their opponents time to dwell on the ball so there was little flowing football on show while Ringmer’s defence largely restricted Selsey to long range shots which in the main were way off target.
The first clear chance of the match came after fifteen minutes when Luke Gedling set Dan Evans free on the left. He cut infield and rounded the goalkeeper only to fire his shot straight at a covering defender on the goal-line. Soon afterwards Ringmer lost Mark Price with a neck injury after an awkward fall. On the half hour mark a sliced clearance from a Selsey defender looked destined to turn into a spectacular own goal only for the ball to bounce in the goalmouth onto the crossbar and away for a corner. Dan Evans took the corner and Joe Dryer was on hand at the far post with a powerful header to give Ringmer the lead.
Selsey equalised three minutes into the second half when the Ringmer defence was slow to close down Clint More on the edge of the penalty area and his shot went through a ruck of players and into the net out of reach of Joe Adams. The Blues responded immediately with Marc Whiteman wriggling through the visiting defence to restore Ringmer’s lead. In response, Tom Ridley forced Adams into a fine one-handed save before Joe Dryer’s cross field pass found Aaron MacMillan wide on the right. He sent a low ball across the Selsey goalmouth where Whiteman steered the ball into the net from close range. Whiteman duly completed his first hat-trick of the season ten minutes from time when he slide the ball home under the keeper after the Selsey defence failed to deal with a loose ball inside their penalty area. Selsey pulled a goal back in the closing minutes when a free kick caused a muddle in the Blues defence with Darren Pearce reacting first to force the ball over the line at the second attempt.
