RINGMER FOOTBALL CLUB LTD 1st X1 SX SENIOR CUP R1 Match Report Selsey 0 Ringmer 2 Sussex Senior Cup Round 1 25/08/07 Report by David Ruffles
This Sussex Senior Cup tie saw Selsey and Ringmer battling to book their place in the second round and an away tie at Eastbourne Borough. Play as very scrappy for long periods and was largely confined to the middle third of the pitch. With both defences having the upper hand goalmouth excitement was in short supply and as a consequence there was little action of note to excite the fans. Selsey’s Tom Ridley, who posed a threat all afternoon, had two shots at goal in the first twenty five minutes both well blocked by Joe Adams in the Ringmer goal. Ringmer’s best chance came after twenty minutes when a cross from Dan Evans found Ryan MacMillan at the far post but he could only direct his header straight at the goalkeeper. Then late in the half Marc Whiteman’s solo run from mid-field ended when he was tripped on the edge of the penalty area. Luke Gedling’s free kick curled round the defence wall and in to the bottom corner of the net to give Ringmer the lead on the stroke of half-time.
Darren Pearce had an early chance to equalise for the home side early in the second half. Miles Scerri missed from the penalty spot for Ringmer before Dan Evans hit a powerful shot from wide on the left with flew over the keeper and into the corner of the net to increase Ringmer’s lead. By now Ringmer were controlling the play and Mark Price almost scored a third goal with an exquisite chip which had the keeper struggling to tip it over the bar.
