Ringmer 5 Sidlesham 2

Ringmer 5 Sidlesham 2

22/09/07

Report by David Ruffles

In an evenly matched first half there was plenty of action at both ends of the field. In the first minute Jordan Willis was allowed a free header at the Ringmer goal but he could only direct the ball straight into the hands of Joe Adams. Then Aaron MacMillan from close range and Luke Gedling from some twenty yards were just off target for the Blues before a surging run from midfield by Sidlesham’s Jo Briggs ended with a shot over the bar. The opening goal of the game came in the fifteenth minute when a cross from Dan Evans was headed home by Jack Johnson from beyond the far post to give Ringmer a short lived lead. Within four minutes the Blues defence allowed Willis to cut in from the right and run across the edge of the penalty area unchallenged before placing his left foot shot over Adams in the home goal. Ten minutes later Ringmer regained the lead as the Sidlesham defence struggled to clear a loose ball only as far as Gedling whose well timed strike flew into the top corner of the net. Again the lead was to last for just four minutes as danger man Willis ran between two defenders the fire the equaliser beyond the reach of Adams. Then moments before half time a corner from Nick Barden was missed by Byron Kearns in the visitors’ goal, Ryan MacMillan headed the ball back across the goal for Miles Scerri to force the ball home to restore Ringmer’s lead.

It was a different story in the second half as Ringmer dominated play as they drove forward in search of further goals. Scerri and the MacMillan brothers all missed chances before Scerri’s shot after sixty minutes, was weakly palmed away by Kearns and Mark Price was on hand by the far post to steer the ball into the net to give Ringmer a two goal advantage. Sidlesham were restricted to rare breakaways as Ringmer continued to control the play but were unable to turn possession into further goals although Ryan Betsworth, making his first team debut for Ringmer, was unlucky not to score a debut goal. Then in the last minute of the game, Marc Whiteman was fouled just inside the penalty area and he picked himself up and made no mistake with his spot-kick.

This victory for Ringmer set a mouth watering prospect as the Blues are at home to the current League leaders,Wick in the John O’Hara League Cup this Saturday and then face the same opponents in the FA Vase the following Saturday at Crabtree Park.
