RINGMER FOOTBALL CLUB LTD U18 Central Division Match Report RINGMER U18s 0 - 2 HAYWARDS HEATH U18s 01/11/07 Report by Rob Hawkes
This was the second time this season that these two teams met at The Caburn and the Ringmer U18s were keen to expunge the memory of that previous encounter with a better performance tonight and from the first whistle it was obvious they were determined to do just this. Ringmer started the game at a frenetic pace which seemed impossible to maintain for the full 90 minutes. But such was their determination to get something from the game that the pace never really slackened.
Haywards Heath’s opening goal in the 10th minute was against the run of play as they converted a throw in, deep in the Ringmer half which wasn’t particularly threatening, but wasn’t cleared. This seemed like a momentary setback in Ringmer’s relentless drive from midfield to create opportunities to get level.
In the 16th minute Jesse Stonell put in a fantastic defensive tackle on the edge of the Ringmer 18yd box, but was immediately penalised by Mr Taylor who awarded HH a free kick. This was very reminiscent of Henry’s tackle in the 2006 Champion’s League Cup Final, which was similarly penalised by Mr Terje Hauge who couldn’t appreciate the level of talent on display (OK that’s where the similarity ends, alright Jesse?!). But this was indicative of further strange decisions to come, which threatened to spoil what was an otherwise excellent game of football. Both sets of players did well to maintain their discipline when clearly frustrated and in particular Jesse Stonell who at Centre Back continued to put in some vital tackles throughout the game unperturbed.
30 minutes into the first half Bob and Steve were forced to change the formation to 4-4-2 when Louis Munnery had to retire injured, being replaced by Ryan Betsworth.
The second half started with Ringmer making further assaults on the HH goal. Notable efforts from Bonnicci, Betsworth and Frost forced good saves from the keeper, to prevent Ringmer from drawing level.
Scott Taylor and Sinan Djevdet came on for Jack Sewell and Andy Bonnicci in the 59th and 75th minutes to assist with Ringmer’s relentless attempts to draw level, but as they pushed forward HH caught them on the break and netted their 2nd goal in the 89th minute.
If points were awarded for work rate alone, Ringmer would have walked away with all three. As it was we did not convert the chances we made and therefore had to go home empty handed. For the neutral it would have been a very entertaining game to watch as both teams played some good football and competed hard for the full 90 minutes.
