U18 Central Division Match Report

RINGMER U18's 7 - 1 SALTDEAN U18's

06/01/08

Match Report by Rob Hawkes

For a few of Bob & Steve’s U18s and 2nd XI squad this was their third game in four days, so a bit of shuffling of the starting eleven was required. For a few of the squad (particularly the Brighton contingent) this game carried with it more than just three points. It also had significant bragging rites with ex-team mates lining up opposite them.

The fact that some of Saltdean’s squad were still turning up as the whistle blew for the kick off did not detract from their determination to make a very strong start with the 10 men they had on the pitch. Within the first minute the Saltdean No.2 had run through the Ringmer defence to take a strike on goal which required an excellent save from Dan Davis to prevent them taking an early lead. Saltdean continued to put Ringmer under a lot of pressure until Ringmer were awarded a penalty in the 12th minute. Strolling up to the Penalty Spot, Ben Ruth stroked the ball into the bottom left hand corner, cool as the proverbial cucumber.

After the penalty strike there was only really one team in it as Ringmer seemed to settle and started to take control of the game. Ringmer scored two further goals before the half-time break, the first fired home by Amro Shaker in the 16th minute from about 12 yards after Buckle’s attempt was blocked and the ball landed nicely for him to bury into the bottom right hand corner of the net. Ringmer’s third goal came from Ben Ruth on 23 minutes who tapped home an angled ball fed into the back post by Shaker.

The second half started with an early substitution for Ringmer as Ben Ruth (still returning to match fitness after injury) was replaced by Ryan Betsworth up front. Ryan waited a full four minutes before firing home Ringmer’s fourth goal, following a goal mouth scramble as Saltdean tried to clear Josh Lawrence’s cross. Immediately following this goal Jesse Stonell was brought on for Jake Buckle in defence.

We had to wait another four minutes before Ringmer could score again. This time Bonnicci tapping home another cross sent into the Saltdean area by Amro Shaker on 55 minutes. Bob and Steve then made their final substitution of the game bringing on Rob Frost for Andy Bonnicci. This gave everybody just enough time to draw breath before Ringmer scored again on 62 minutes. This time James Novis finishing off an excellent passage of football between Amro Shaker (again!) and Rob Frost who zigzagged through the defence before laying the ball off to James to fire home with sufficient venom to guarantee his own personal bragging rites.

Despite being on the receiving end of a heavy defeat, it was all credit to their club that the Saltdean players never lost their discipline or determination to get back into the game. Their efforts were finally rewarded in the 70th minute as their No.2 ran through to fire past the unprotected Dan Davis.

The final goal of the game fell to Rob Frost, whose blistering shot from the edge of the area gave the Saltdean keeper no chance of saving it, bringing Ringmer’s goal tally for their morning’s work to seven. As I have already said, this was the third game in four days for Bob & Steve’s U18s and 2nd XI squad who grafted three out of three emphatic wins. Well done to the entire squad whose fitness has been tested in some pretty tough conditions over the past four days and not found wanting, in any department.
