RINGMER FOOTBALL CLUB LTD U18 Central Division Match Report Southwick U18s 4 - 2 Ringmer U18s 27/01/08 Match Report by Rob Hawkes
This was the return fixture of the previous meeting of the two sides back in September, when Southwick ran out eventual winners in a fiercely competitive game with only few attempts on goal. Today’s game was a more open affair with both sides keen to play some good football.
Ringmer started very positively and looked the better side early on, but a momentary lapse in concentration allowed Southwick through to take the lead in the 4th minute against the run of play. In the 34th minute Mr Savage penalised Paul O’Donnell’s excellent last ditch tackle awarding Southwick an undeserved penalty kick. Facing the spot kick Dan Davis guessed right and got a strong hand to the ball, but only managed to parry it back into the path of the encroaching Southwick player who netted the rebound.
Ringmer worked hard to get back into the game and a good through ball from Novis in the 41st minute found Bonnicci in the Southwick area, who finished with customary panache, chipping the keeper to make the score 2 -1. This come back was short lived and two minutes later Southwick spilt to Ringmer defence with another of their many long balls and fired past Dan to restore their two goal lead.
Bob and Steve made some tactical changes at half time, bringing on Rob Frost for Amro Shaker and switching to a 4-4-2 instead of the 4-3-3 first half line up. Ringmer started well again and had a much more dominant second half. Working hard they eventually ground down the Southwick defence and were rewarded for their efforts in the 77th minute when Taylor converted a Novis free kick, firing home at the back post. This recovery was short lived (as in the first half) when a defensive error allowed Southwick through a minute later, against the run of play, to restore their two goal cushion and make the final score 4 – 2.
This was a tough away fixture for Ringmer whose efforts were continually frustrated by a good Southwick side.
It would be remiss of me not to pass on everyone’s thanks to Mr Novis (senior) for a brief off pitch comedy moment as his coffee was instantaneously atomised by Taylor’s emphatic defensive clearance, enveloping him and those around him in a hot brown mist and tiny particles of the polystyrene cup.
