SCFA YOUTH CUP FIRST ROUND

16/09/07

Report by Rob Hawkes

Ringmer started this game in complete control and anyone watching was left wondering how the home side failed to wrap it up the first half. The lads played some quality football and dominated possession. They looked for all the world as though they were going to cruise through to the next round. However, Wealden had other ideas and always looked dangerous on the counter attack and it took the full 120 minutes of this cup tie to secure the victory. The first half concluded only 1 – 0 to the home side with the solitary goal from Robbie Frost in the 16th minute, who keeping his composure in front of goal as he ran through the Wealden defence and slipped the ball to the right of the Wealden keeper.

Three minutes into the second half Josh Lawrence used his aerial strength to head in a good corner kick from James Novis to put Ringmer 2 – 0 up.

Wealden made three substitutions in the first 20 minutes of the second half which changed the balance of the game and seemed to give them more pace up front where they were quick to benefit from one of the numerous long balls being played through to their strikers and scored the first of their goals in the 68th minute. Jake Buckle came on for Joe Arnold before the game restarted and five minutes later Ringmer got their third goal, scored by Robbie Frost following his fantastic mazy solo run through the Wealden defence.

Wealden responded quickly with two goals in the 76th & 78th minutes to bring the score level. The 90 minutes concluded 3 -3 and Ringmer were left wondering how they had not won the game. Both teams dragged their tired legs onto the pitch for another 30 minutes of extra time in the warm September sunshine.

The first period of extra time produced Ringmer’s fourth goal and the quote of the match from Mr Munnery who despairingly said, at the run forward from his centre back Josh Lawrence, “That’s just what I don’t want him to do!” then watched as Josh smashed a shot from fully 40 yards into the back of the Wealden net. What a goal and what a quote! Who’d be a Manager eh?

Wealden refused to roll over and got their fourth goal in the 107th minute. Ringmer finally got their match winner in the 119th minute when Justin Wood, who had a great game at left back today, went on another one of his tireless runs up the left wing, linking up with Scott Taylor who crossed the ball to Andy Bonnicci waiting in the 6 yard box who tucked the ball past the Wealden keeper to make it 5 - 4.

As with Friday’s 2nd XI game, this was a meeting of some old friends for many involved, but in contrast to Friday’s game this was a good natured game reflecting the professional approach of both sets of managers.
