RINGMER FOOTBALL CLUB LTD 1st X1 Division One Match Report Ringmer 0 Whitehawk 3 24/03/08 Match Rewport by David Rufflews
Both sides came into this match on the back of disappointing results in their previous matches and both were missing several regular players. Ringmer needed the points to improve their League position while the Hawks were anxious to keep alive the mathematical possibility of still winning the title.
Whitehawk took the lead after seventeen minutes when Ryan Bradley ran through the Blues defence to reach a long through ball and to fire home beyond the reach of Joe Adams. Three minutes later Luke Gedling cut in from the right and his shot from twenty yards seemed destined for the top corner of the net before it was plucked from under the bar by giant goalkeeper, Ross Standen. Two minutes later Ringmer lost the ball in midfield and Bradley against burst through the defence before Glen Matten pushed him over inside the penalty area. Bradley made no mistake from the resulting spot kick to put the visitors two goals in front. Just after thirty minutes Gedling’s run from midfield ended with a curling shot which narrowing missed its target. Ten minutes later Standen was forced to dive to turn aside a shot from Marc Whiteman to perverse the Hawks lead at half time.
Three substitutions early in the second half did nothing to change Ringmer’s fortune as the Hawks went further ahead inside ten minutes with a third goal . A long raking pass from left back to right wing set Lee Newman clear on the right and his cross was turned into the net by Paul Stevenson. Moments later Glen Matten was on hand to clear off the line from Bradley. For much of the game Ringmer had played some pretty football without any real penetration but after the hour they enjoyed their best spell of the game. Simon Greatwich’s cross from the right was turned just wide of the near post by Whiteman. Then Greatwich got on the end of a cross from Joe Dryer only to blaze his shot over the bar. The same player was again off target following a free kick from Gedling. Finally Standen was forced to dive onto the deck to keep out Dryer’s powerful shot from twenty five yards.
By now news of Crowborough’s defeat at Redhill had filtered through so the destination of the title remains undecided for at least another week.
