After a very emotional day at Herve King’s funeral celebration on Friday Ringmer fans were anxious about the effect on the players going into Saturday’s match but any anxiety was soon dispelled by the team’s performance.

 

In a first half where play was largely confined to the middle third of the pitch there were only three chances to score and all three fell to Ringmer. After twenty minutes Marc Whiteman’s shot was turned aside by Anthony Ender in the home goal. Five minutes later a free kick from twenty yards from Joe Dryer flew into the top corner of the net to give the Blues the lead. Then five minutes before half time a cross from Jack Johnson found Miles Scerri just inside the home penalty area and his well struck shot rebounded off the cross bar into a ruck of players and was eventually scrambled to safety.

 

Both defences were on top in the early stages of the second half. However, ten minutes into the half Mark Price and Whiteman combined to create an opening for Luke Gedling but his shot was turned past the post for a corner by Ender. Then ten minutes later the complexion of the game changed. There seemed little danger to the Ringmer goal as there were no Wick attackers in the vicinity of a cross from the right but a misunderstanding between Glen Matten and goalkeeper Joe Adams over who was going for the ball ended with Matten heading the ball into an empty net to gift the home side a goal which their performance did not deserve. From then on Wick put Ringmer under pressure for the first time in the match but it took a hotly contested penalty to settle the outcome of the game. With some fifteen minutes from time Scott Murfin sent Adams the wrong way as he placed his spot kick into the bottom corner of the net. In the closing moments the same player put a shot inches over the Blues crossbar while Gedling was denied an equaliser by a save from Ender.
