Wick 0 Ringmer 2

Report by David Ruffles

Ringmer reached the second round of the FA Vase for the first time in six seasons with a superb team effort to defeat Wick for the second time in eight days on Saturday.

Neither side troubled the goalkeepers in the first twenty minutes as both teams sought to find a way through some stout defending. The first chance fell to the home side as a cross from Steve Boston found Dominic Shepherd less than two yards from goal but somehow he contrived to lift his shot over the Ringmer crossbar. At the other end Ringmer appealed in vain for a penalty when Mark Price was tripped inside the Wickers penalty area. Then Jack Johnson sent Andy Hart flying down the right wing, he cut in along the bi-line before crossing for Marc Whiteman to side-foot Ringmer into the lead with some thirty minutes played. The home side almost levelled the scores inside three minutes when a shot on the turn from Paul Jones was turned past the post by Joe Adams at full stretch. Ringmer had two more chances to increase their lead before half time. First, when a free kick from Nick Barden was punched away by David Leaver, the Wickers’ goalkeeper and then when Johnson’s cross went through the keeper’s hands before rebounding off the crossbar.

Joe Dryer had two chances early in the second half – the first with a shot from twenty yards and the second when he muscled down the left flank only for his shot from a narrow angle to be pushed round the near post by Leaver. However, Ringmer soon doubled their lead when corner from Johnson saw Danny McLaughlin’s powerful header fly into the net. Wick now pressed forward trying to get back in the game and their best chance came when Tom Manton’s cross was met by Shepherd at the near post but the striker was unable to direct the ball goalwards. With Ryan MacMillan and Joe Adams dealing comfortably with anything in the air it was Ringmer who looked the most likely to score with McLaughlin and Dryer both forcing Leaver to make good saves to keep Wickers faint hopes alive until the final whistle.
