RINGMER FOOTBALL CLUB LTD 1st X1 Division One Match Report Ringmer 1 Wick 2 09/02/08 Match Report by David Ruffles
With two victories over Wick already this season Ringmer had high hopes of making it a hat-trick on Saturday and continuing their climb up the table but alas it was not to be.
Joe Dryer’s left foot shot from near the edge of the penalty area went just inside the post to give Ringmer the lead after three minutes. The Blues then took control of the game but were let down by the final ball which all too often went straight to a Wick player. Marc Whiteman had a couple of chances to increase the lead but he was denied first by a defender and then by the Wicker’s goalkeeper. Meanwhile Wick were struggling to penetrate the Ringmer defence. Then after thirty three minutes and against the run of play Wick drew level after a superb solo effort from Gareth Green who cut inside from the right flank to fire a left foot shot past Joe Adams. The goal seemed to deflate the home side and sparked off a spell of dominance from Wick for whom Green was prominent against once of his former clubs. However the best chance came in the last minute of the first half with Anthony Elder making a flying save to turn aside a powerful strike from Dryer who had run onto a through ball from Herve King.
The second half saw Wick have the best of the early exchanges before a cross from the left wing by Green found Philip Turner bearing down on goal and he forced the ball home at the far post to give the Wickers the lead. With half an hour left to play Ringmer pressed forward in search of an equaliser with Elder making fine saves to deny Johnson and Dryer. Then a cross from Andy Hart found Ryan MacMillan unmarked at the far post but his header went just wide. Almost immediately a cross from Johnson was just too high for King who, although he got his head to the ball, was unable to direct it into the net. With time running out a rare attack from Wick saw Adams produce a fine double save to deny Ricky Robertshaw and then Paul Elliott. There was still time for tempers to be frayed as the Blues frustrations lead to Steve Hunt’s dismissal and a booking for Danny McLaughlin in the last minutes of a game which Ringmer ultimately lost because they failed to convert their early control into a commanding lead.
