Ringmer 2 Wick 1

Ringmer 2 Wick 1

29/09/07

Report by David Ruffles

Both sides were weakened by injuries and non-availabilities for this rehearsal for next Saturday’s FA Vase encounter. Nevertheless both sides were intent on gaining a psychological advantage ahead of that fixture. It was Wickers who seized the early initiative in the second minute when the Ringmer defence stood looking for a free kick instead of dealing with a seemingly innocuous cross allowing former Ringmer favourite Dominic Shepherd to head home from close range. Some ten minutes later a cross-field ball from Ryan MacMillan found Joe Dryer who forced his way past a defender only to place his shot inches wide. But inside a minute, Dryer dribbled through the massed ranks of Wickers defence to level the scores with a powerful shot into the bottom corner of the net. The remainder the first half turned into a combative mid-field battle with chances at a premium as both defences kept the forward lines under tight raps. The closest either side came to a goal was when Ryan MacMillan had a header cleared off the line by a Wick defender but then with half time moments away Ringmer took the lead. A rapid exchange of passes involving Jack Johnson, Miles Scerri and Mark Price down the right flank turned defence into attack and when the ball arrived at the feet of Marc Whiteman his shot on the run from the corner of the penalty area found the bottom corner of the net.

The second half belonged to Ringmer restricted the visitors to the odd breakaway while Whiteman posed all sorts of problems for the Wickers defence. Twice he was put clear through by clever passes from Scerri only to put his first shot wide and his second straight at the keeper. Then Whiteman set Dan Evans free on the left and his shot from the touchline was turned over the bar by David Leaver in the visitor’s goal. The keeper again came to the Wickers rescue to deny Whiteman when a free-kick from Andy Hart found the Blues striker free on the far side of goal.
