1ST X1 5 – 2 RINGMER 1ST XI Division
One 02/05/09 Match
Report by David Ruffles In
Saturday’s early kick-off Ringmer were up against an Arundel
side aiming to set the benchmark for the other sides still in with a
chance of winning the title. From the outset it was clear that
veteran Ringmer goalkeeper, Graham Bannatyne, was in for a busy
afternoon as the home side went in search for 3 points while at the
same time enhancing their goal difference.
The
first ten minutes saw the Blues goal under siege with the home side
going close to twice taking an early lead. Then Ringmer began to
settle and began to make chances of their own with Matt Percival
unlucky not to open the scoring with a powerful strike from just
outside the penalty area which went just wide of the target. A
minute later Jayson Sowter cleared a header from Gary Norgate off
the Ringmer goal-line. Moments later Sam Sowter’s snap shot
was just inches of target. Then Bannatyne made a one-handed save to
deny Howard Neighbour while at the other end a chip from mid-field
by David Altendorf beat Lee Arnell in the home goal before passing
just over the crossbar. Although Arundel had had more of the
possession in the first half Ringmer were creating more chances and
their reward came just before half-time when a shot from Percival
rebounded off a defender with Sam Sowter reacting quickly to force
the ball into the net. Five
minutes into the second half the scores were level as Neighbour
headed a ball out of defence into the path of Norgate who proceeded
to chip the ball over Bannatyne. Moments later Neighbour’s
shot through a crowded box was cleared off the goal-line by Will
Broomfield before a thirty-five yard strike from David Altendorf
went into the net off the post to restore Ringmer’s lead.
Arundel through threw everything into attack and played the
remainder of the match with three strikers and with some fifteen
minutes left to play Neighbour levelled the scores. Then three goals
in the last ten minutes, two from James Crane and one from Norgate
sent the home fans into jubilant mood with the Mullets on top of the
table (albeit only for one hour) while Ringmer’s young side
finished in a creditable tenth place.
