Fully Insured RINGMER 1ST X1 0 – 3 EASTBOURNE UA 1ST X1 DIVISION ONE 07/04/09 Match Report by David Ruffles
Although the Blues were beaten the scoreline flattered the visitors as they regained top spot on Tuesday night. For long periods there was little to choose between the sides but ultimately Eastbourne UA had more to play for and hence more desire than Ringmer.
The early initiative was with the visitors as they penned Ringmer back in their own half for the first twenty minutes. The best chance of this spell came when Jayson Sowter launched an attempted clearance high into the night sky and when it finally came to earth at the feet of Tom Manton the striker somehow contrived to push the ball wide from close range. Then on the half hour mark Jo Jo Tubon laid the ball into the path of Aaron MacMillan only for his well struck shot to be turned aside for a corner by goalkeeper Nick Hayward. Almost immediately play switched to the other end with Brad Manton giving the visitors the lead with a powerful shot which rebounded back into play of the back stanchion of the goal before Joe Adams could move. Ringmer were gifted a chance a minute later as Hayward dropped a cross from Kieran Patel and although Tubon reacted quickly he directed his shot inches wide of the target. Then five minutes from half time a cross from the left flank bobbed around the Ringmer goalmouth before Luke Mann forced the ball into the net to send the Blues in at half time with a two goal deficit.
Ringmer took the fight to their opponents from the start of the second half but try as they might they could not find a way through a packed defence. With twenty minutes left on the clock Joe Dryer forced Hayward to be at full stretch to deflect his goal bound shot around the post for a corner. Then Adams was adjudged to have brought down an Eastbourne player inside his penalty area. However Adams made a fine save to keep out the resulting spot-kick from Mann. Ringmer continued to go in search of a goal but left themselves vulnerable to a counter attack and third goal for the visitors duly came with a breakaway goal from Steve Morris just before the final whistle.
