November 2008 Report
by David Ruffles The
match offered Ringmer fans the chance to renew acquaintance with
former Ringmer boss John Crumplin now in charge at Redhill and
ex-Ringmer players Charlie Stagg and Eddie Koboah and with Mark
Price returning to the Ringmer squad for the first time following
surgery in May.
On
a bitterly cold afternoon an uneven playing surface spoilt this game
as a spectacle. Both sides tried to play attractive football but
offered little excitement to warm the hands and feet of their
supporters as the ball continually bobbled over the pitch making
ball control difficult for players. Play switched from end to end in
the first half with both sides missing chances in the first half
hour. A long range effort from Lee Radford drifted wide of the
Ringmer goal before Joe Dryer had a shot fumbled by Chris May in the
home goal. Then a long clearance from May set up a chance for Wayne
Robinson but his shot went straight into the arms of Joe Adams. Then
a header from Jo Jo Tubon found Simon Greatwich unmarked at the far
post but he blazed his shot high into the trees behind the goal. The
next to miss the target was Stagg whose header went over the Ringmer
cross bar. The opening goal came after thirty four minutes when a
cross from Koboah was side footed into the net near the far post to
give the home side the lead going in at half time. Ringmer
introduced Ryan MacMillan and Jayson Sowter at the start of the
second half and this double substitution heralded a period of play
when the Blues controlled proceedings with Tubon and Dryer both
going close to scoring before Tubon was brought down inside the
penalty area. Ryan MacMillan sent May the wrong way with his spot
kick to level the scores with just over twenty minutes left to play.
Ringmer continued to press forward and looked likely winners but
Redhill always looked threatening in their intermittent excursions
into the Ringmer half. Aaron Murphy had a shot from the right wing
go inches past Joe Adams’s right hand post. Then a cross from
Radford was headed onto the ground and up into the goal by Tommy
Brown to put the home side back in front much to the delight of his
team-mates. Dryer almost snatched a late equaliser for the Blues
when he shot inches wide after a short free kick from Price opened
up a gap in the home defences. With
Eastbourne UA and Pagham both winning Ringmer, as a result of this
defeat, dropped to third place in the table ahead of Redhill, Three
Bridges and Horsham YMCA on goal difference with just two points
separating the top six sides in the league. This coming Saturday the
Blues face seventh placed Wick at the Caburn in another vital top of
the table contest.
