RINGMER 1st X1 3 - 5 CHICHESTER CITY 1st X1 Division One 13/02/10 Report by The Crouches
Ringmer's inconsistent form showed again on Saturday after losing 5-3 to league title contenders Chichester City. Ringmer, still hurting after loosing out to Hailsham 5-0 on Wednesday evening knew they had to get something out of this match to bolster their points in the table. This was not to be however as Chi got the better of the battling Blues in a thrilling contest.
Ringmer again started well and certainly matched the visitors, even having the first of two early chances , In the first minute, Sam Sowter made a run down the left and crossed to Mark Price running in on goal who at point of shooting met with the Chi keeper Greg Forster, with the loose ball coming perilously close to trickling over the Chi goal line, seconds later brother Jayson Sowter fed down field to Joe Dryer whose cross was met by Sam Sowter who headed in just wide..
Although the Blues looked confident moving the ball in midfield the back line didn't look so happy as Chi attacked giving Blues keeper Gary Trott a fair amount of work to do. On one such occasion Trott came out to punch away a cross which left him on the ground in some discomfort with an injured shoulder.
Chichester, after a good spell of pressure finally slipped in behind the Blues defence and got a shot in Trott making a good block to be cleared by a defender, minutes later Glen Matten made a great tackle on the edge of the six yard box to stop Chi's Joe Briggs from scoring a certain goal. At the other end a Ringmer attack ended as Price and the keeper Forster, clash going for the same ball once again. A few minutes later Price picked up from a goal kick and passes out to Sowter (J) who came narrowly close to banging one in but the balls speed beat him. On twenty minutes it was David Altendorff's header that went into Forster's arms. Chi then come back to blast in a shot from sixteen yards in which Trott somehow got to and tipped it on to the bar for a Chi corner which came to nothing and ended in the safe hands of Trott.
Ringmer then suffered as the ever hard working Sowter(J) suffered a bad injury after an opponents studs up tackle which forced him to retire, the gash just below the knee needing the muscle and skin to be stitched, the ref ignored the tackle itself and only asked Sowter to calm down after he tried to point this out to him! With Sowter off Kieran Patel was brought on in an early substitution.
Chichester then came on with a wave of attacks, Trott saving and Sam Sowter heading out over the bar to safety. It seemed inevitable a goal would come sooner or later. This did come on the half hour on one such Chichester attack, a shot was blasted in from the edge of the 18 yard box in which Trott initially made a good save but unfortunately couldn't hold on to the ball, the Blues defence were unable to make an effective clearance and the ball fell to James Temple who blasted it back in for Chichester's opening goal. Two more chances came a few minutes later after Chi's Callum Cutler had two good shots saved by Trott.
Ringmer had a great chance thwarted by the upright after Price put Dryer through on a good run down the left, Dryers strong shot though frustratingly pinging off the upright straight into Forsters arms. On return Chi cause havoc in the Ringmer area as Blues defence struggle to get hold of the ball, Trott has to clear but the ball fell nicely for Cutler to blast back in again past a diving keeper. 0-2 at the Break.
A thrilling second half saw Ringmer pull two goals back to even things up. The first goal from Ringmer coming after only 11 minutes a great ball in from Dryer on the left to Price who stepped over the ball to let Sowter (S) fire in. The second, Dryer again with a pin point cross from the left was met by Patel on the far post to sweetly head the ball home.
Unfortunately two defensive errors meant the visitors scoring twice straight after in quick succession making it 4-2, the first originating from a Chichester corner which had the home defence slightly in disarray as Temple shot in from close range, then a couple of minutes later a throw in from the same side had a similar affect this time Chi's Joe Briggs found the net again from short range.
Then a while later five minutes before time the visitors struck again making it 5-2 when substitute Tim Harruma took advantage of a static defence line and planted the ball into the Ringmer net.
The Blues however true to form battled on determined that time was not going to stop their comeback, Dryer still working hard on the left to feed across to the middle with Sowter and Patel battling away up front. A goal finally came with 4 minutes to go with Ryan MacMillan (on for Price) who had a few practice runs up the right finally got the better of his defenders and crossed in for Patel to knock in his second. Ringmer rushed the ball back to restart, Dryer crossing to MacMillan who just failed to connect with the ball in front of goal and Sowter (S) knocking in from the right with Patel this time millimetres away from connecting with the ball again in front of goal.
Try as they might the whistle beat the Blues and the match ended with Chichester bagging the three points.
