COVE FC 2 – 3 RINGMER FC (after extra-time) FA Vase R2 19/09/09 Report by David Ruffles
Ringmer penchant for dramatic finishes saw the Blues win through to a home tie against Crowborough Athletic with the decisive goal coming in the last minute of stoppage time.
The Blues fell behind in the third minute when Cove were awarded a free kick out on their right flank and Nathan Woodbridge, unnoticed as he approached the far post, was allowed a free header to give the home side the lead. Cove continued to press forward spurred on by long kicks from their goalkeeper while Ringmer’s main outlet was the pace of Darren Lok wide on the right. With half an hour gone Ringmer keeper Gary Trott launched a long ball up field which was headed on by Ryan MacMillan for Kieran Patel to lift over the advancing goalkeeper and into the net to level the scores. Minutes later Lok almost put the Blues in front with a shot that was just inches the wrong side of the post.
The second half saw both sides looking for goals but there was little goalmouth action of note although Trott did well to deny Martin Girling on the hour mark when he tipped his shot around the post for a corner. Otherwise both defences held firm with Aaron Hasan in commanding form for Ringmer. Patel almost snatched a late goal for the Blues before Trott blocked two shots in quick succession to deny Cove the decisive goal.
Hasan had a goal-bound header saved by the Cove keeper in the first period of extra-time. Then Cove substitute, Steve Duff, who had looked dangerous on the left wing, benefited from a lapse in the Blues defence to beat Trott from the edge of the penalty area. Ringmer responded immediately with Craig Brown’s header caught by the keeper only at the second attempt. However with seven minutes remaining in the second period of extra-time the equaliser came from Patel who was well placed to pounce on a loose ball after Brown’s first shot had been blocked. Martyn Williams wasted a chance for the home side when he blazed a shot over the bar moments later. Then the dramatic last gasp winner for the Blues came when Brown’s mis-hit shot trickled into the net via the far post.
