RINGMER 1st X1 1 - 5 EAST GRINSTEAD TOWN DIVISION ONE 13/10/09 Report by David TRuffles
With former management team of Steve Johnson and Paul Thomsett including three ex-Ringmer players in their starting line-up the visitors were destined to go home with an emphatic win under their belts.
East Grinstead were dominant at the back and always looked dangerous going forward. The pattern for the night was set right from the start. A collision between East Grinstead’s goalkeeper Martin Jacobs and one of his defenders left Tom Swancott with an open goal but his shot struck the post rather than the back of the net. Then after nine minutes a similar collision at the other end involving Sean MacFadden and a defender allowed Aaron MacMillan to give the Wasps an early lead. The game was being played at a frantic pace with players denied time to settle on the ball. Ringmer’s attack struggled to penetrate the Wasps defence not least because they adopted a route one approach as a way of relieving pressure on their own defence. McFadden was by far the busier of the two keepers while Aaron MacMillan had the better of his brother Ryan and had a number of chances to increase his goal tally before half time.
Another former Ringmer favourite Jack Johnson was also in lively form and it was he who found the net in the first minute of the second half with a shot from the narrowest of angles which squeezed in at the near post despite a despairing dive by Ryan MacMillan. Four minutes later a first time shot from Luke Piscina from the edge of the penalty area effectively settled the game only for Ben Burns to increase the Wasps lead ten minutes later when he found himself completely unmarked with plenty of time to put the ball beyond the reach of McFadden. Although Ringmer hit back within a minute when a free kick from Jon Marzetti caused panic in the Wasps defence allowing Jo Jo Tubon fire the ball into the corner of the net. Ringmer’s joy was short-lived though with Charlie Marshall restoring East Grinstead’s four goal advantage minutes later. By now Ringmer were making inroads into the visitors defence with some intricate passing moves with Darren Lok, Kieran Patel and Jayson Sowter all testing Jacobs. However all too often the final pass went astray and at the end the Blues were well beaten by the better team on the night – which was scant consolation as the sides swapped places in the relegation battle at the foot of the table.
