Report by David Ruffles

In the opening game of the season Ringmer had an early chance to take the lead only for Craig Brown’s chip to go just over the crossbar. However, the home side soon took control of the first half action as the visitors were forced into playing the same long ball game as their opponents stopped (not always fairly in the eyes of the referee) the Blues from playing their normal passing game. Meanwhile the Blues defence struggled with the pace of the Redhill attackers and had goalkeeper Sean McFadden to thank for keeping the score sheet blank at half-time.

The second half began in similar vein with Leon Dussard nearly putting the home side in front before Ringmer gradually began to find their men with some good flowing football. The Blues reaped their reward when Joe Dryer’s run down the left ended with a cross into the goalmouth where the ball was met at the far post by a diving header from the unmarked Darren Lok to give Ringmer the lead some thirty minutes from time. With Ringmer now dictating the play it looked as if the Blues would take all three points but in stoppage time a Ringmer attack broke down in midfield allowing Chris Hubbard to run through the defence and round McFadden before striking the ball into the net with the last kick of the match.

In terms of possession over the whole game a draw was perhaps a fair result but that was little consolation to the Ringmer players and supporters who had been poised to celebrate a winning start to the campaign.
