Match Team and Report

RINGMER FC 0 – 2 WHITEHAWK

S.C.F.L. DIVISION ONE

21/11/2009

Reported by Ben Ashcroft

After losing away at Peacehaven in their last fixture, Ringmer had the difficult challenge of facing high fliers Whitehawk at the Caburn early today. In poor conditions and on a boggy pitch, both sides failed to get down to their usual quick passing football. And it was two late goals from Wes Tate and Danny Davis respectively that sealed all three points for the visitors.

The early exchanges were scrappy to say the least, and in blustery conditions it was clear that ground play would be more successful than the long ball tactic. The visitors began to boss possession and good link up play by Wes Tate saw the impressive Jay Lovett’s cross flash wide. Whitehawk then had two free kicks in quick succession that tested the Ringmer backline. Marzetti cleared the first as the ball swirled in the conditions and the second was somewhat over hit.

Ringmer began to fight back into the game with battling performances in the middle of the park from Macmillan and Patel. The two linked up to feed Dryer down the left hand side, and he cut back and drilled a 25-yard shot just wide of the right hand upright.

Whitehawk then had several opportunities to take the lead. On 15 minutes, Danny Taylor drilled a long range effort narrowly over the bar. From the resulting goal kick, Whitehawk regained possession and last ditch defending from Hasan stopped Mark Whiteman getting a shot away for the visitors. The throw created the next opportunity for the away side; a cross from out wide was met with a perfectly timed volley by Jay Lovett, and if it wasn’t for the heroic defending of the Ringmer backline, it would have been one-nil to Whitehawk.

With the boys on the back foot, a counter attack ever so nearly provided the game’s first goal. Ryan Macmillan found space down the right hand side and his cross was met by the sliding Price who agonisingly hit the bar from 8 yards out – the best chance of the first half for Ringmer.

Back came the away side and a clearance off the line by Joe Dryer was quickly followed by a smart save from Trott as Mark Whiteman went clean through. The link up play of Whiteman and Tate for Whitehawk was causing all sorts of problems, but the score remained nil a piece.

As half time loomed, Kirkwood went one-on-one with Trott and a brave lunge by the ‘keeper looked all the world a penalty, but the referee pointed for a corner - top keeping by Trott. Lovett again crossed from deep for Darren Budd and any connection with the ball would have brought the first goal for Whitehawk. Whiteman then dragged wide from a tight angle as the pressure from the visitors started to fade.

An entertaining first half in dreadful conditions was brought to a close with no further incident by referee Stuart Green. And although Ringmer were on the back foot for long periods, they looked dangerous on the counter and were likely hoping for a sneaky early goal in the second half.

Half Time – Ringmer 0 – 0 Whitehawk

The second half started with a flurry of chances for both sides. A high looping cross from Whitehawk player Kevin Townsend was punched clear by Trott. And a positive overlap by Darren Lok at the other end, saw him take aim from the corner of the 18-yard area. Stuart Robinson saved well to his right to keep the game goalless.

The game then died down as both teams found the rapid deterioration of the pitch hard going. A long range shot by Lovett was the last bit of action during a dull 15-minute period. Both sides found playing the ball along the ground difficult with the wind swirling around the Caburn.

The game did come to life just after the hour, when the hard-working Jo Jo Tubon turned his marker and took aim from 15 yards. His shot was palmed clear and the resulting cross was scrambled away by the Whitehawk defence.

Then came the game’s turning point – A scrappy bit of play in the centre of midfield saw the pacy Darren Lok stride past Jay Head. A clip on the ankle nearly knocked the winger over but he managed to keep his footing to slot the ball past the oncoming goalkeeper Robinson. One-nil to Ringmer, or so everybody thought! The referee had decided to pull the game back just as Lok took aim for the foul by Head. An advantage would have given the home side the lead; But referee Green decided that there was no advantage to be played? A bizarre decision but one that Ringmer had to get on with. An 11-man protest had no effect and the resulting free kick hit the wall.

The introduction of Sam Sowter and Craig Browne suggested Ringmer were happy with a point. But heartbreak with less than ten minutes left, as the away side got the game’s opener. In the terrible conditions a long range shot was only partially saved by Trott and the resulting rebound was tapped away by West Tate.

Ringmer looked visibly beaten, and the inevitable second goal came when Townsend released substitute Danny Davis. He beat the offside trap and the sprawling Trott to kill the game off at two goals to nil.

Scott Kirkwood was sent off for the away side with minutes remaining with what looked like a stamp and Danny Davis broke the offside trap again as he raced through to make it three. But a fine stop at the feet of the attacker by Trott, kept the game at two-nil.

Full Time – Ringmer 0 – 2 Whitehawk

You definitely get the feeling that it was a point lost at the Caburn today, even though Ringmer were under pressure for long periods. Resolute defending and tenacity by all, deserved at least a point and victories are definitely around the corner.
