RINGMER 3 – 6 WICK DIVISION ONE 12/09/09 Report by David Ruffles
In a game between two sides playing fast attacking football table–topping Wick were made to work much harder than the score-line suggests in order to come away from the Caburn with all three points. The Wickers quickly seized the initiative, with the lively Scott Murfin causing the Ringmer defence problems all afternoon. As early as the seventh minute it took a goal-line clearance from Matt Barten to deny Murfin. Then two minutes later a hesitant defence allowed Darren Pearce to give the visitors the lead with a ball floated over the head of Barten who again was well positioned in the goalmouth. Ringmer responded immediately with David Altendorf levelling the score with a shot that took a deflection off a defender on its way into the net. Moments later Philip Turner’s cross was deflected by Trott for a corner which the Ringmer defence failed to clear before Wick regained the lead with a header from Lee Barnard. With Wick pressing forward for more goals Philip Turner’s run down the right flank ended when Turner’s shot flew beyond the reach of Trott for the Wicker’s third goal. Ringmer responded promptly when Matt Percival diverted a cross from Darren Lok away from the Wick goalkeeper and into the net to pull a goal back. Then Jo Jo Tubon beat the keeper to a through ball to level the scores ten minutes before half-time.
With the promise of more thrills in the second half Ringmer suffered an early blow with the dismissal of Jon Marzetti for two yellow cards within two minutes of each other. Wick immediately capitalised on the one man advantage with two goals in the space of three minutes to effectively end the match as a contest. First Murfin’s shot was turned away by Trott only for Turner to tap the ball home at the far post. Then a cross from the right was headed home by Simon Clayton unopposed in the six yard box with some thirty minutes left on the clock. Both sides continued to search for goals and the last goal of the game duly came a minute from time. Trott brought down Ben Buckland inside the Blues penalty area and from the resulting penalty kick Murfin sent Trott the wrong way to complete a disappointing afternoon for Ringmer, who until the sending off had looked the equal of their opponents.
