Match Team and Report

Ringmer 2nd XI – 0 v 1 – Newhaven 2nd XI

SCFL Reserve Section East

23/04/10

Report by Steve Frost

The last game of the season for the Reserves was against a stronger Newhaven side than they had met at the Fort ground earlier in the season. Despite this, only one goal in favour of Newhaven separated the two sides at the end however Matt Cruttwell had come to Ringmer’s rescue a number of times. As has been the norm for the Reserves this season the team this night had many changes from the mid week game.

Newhaven started the game up the slope and before most of the spectators had found their perches Newhaven had the ball in the net, fortunately for Ringmer it was offside. This early scare served its purpose in providing a wakeup call.

The football played by both sides tonight was an improvement on Wednesday night’s game with each side having their share of possession. It was a full 20 minutes before Ringmer created an opportunity on goal. The build up comprised a sequence of good moves supplying Ryan with an opportunity to strike fiercely with his left foot which was fingered over the crossbar by the Newhaven keeper. Six minutes later Ryan had a one on one with the Newhaven keeper which went the way of Newhaven.

The remainder of the first half played out with both sides taking turns to probe each other’s defence and neither creating opportunities to test each other’s keeper. (0-0) at half time.

Ringmer restarted the game however it was Newhaven that appeared the more threatening in the opening skirmishes. On 10 minutes, Matt was required to use his finger tips to steer a firm Newhaven header over his crossbar.

With 60 minutes on the clock Ringmer conceded a penalty after handling in the box. Matt guessed correctly and made a brilliant two handed save diving to his right, Ringmer scrambled the ball to safety.

Five minutes later Ryan was withdrawn and Ben introduced to the action by taking up a right midfield position releasing Ben up front. Elmo takes the captains armband.

Chris creates an opportunity to strike with his right however the shot passes right of the Newhaven. This is shortly reflected with different consequences at the Ringmer end when on 78 minutes the Ringmer defence lapse allowing Newhaven to score (0-1).

This is immediately followed by another Ringmer slip allowing Newhaven another opportunity to score save for the strong arms of Matt who pushes the ball wide to his right.

The remainder of the game is played out with no further change in the score.

That is it, the season is over, well done to all of you who have been through yet another turbulent year of management. Many thanks to Dave and Nobby who on top of their existing football commitments have selflessly stood in and worked with the team. Well done to all of the youth team members who have helped plug the gaps.

Adeus.

Steve.
