Match Team and Report

Ringmer 2nd XI – 2 v 3 – Sidley 2nd XI

SCFL Reserve Section East

21/04/10

Report by Steve Frost

The reserves penultimate game was another of those where the result tipped the way of the opposition. Ringmer were not at their best this night even with Kieran bagging a brace.

Ringmer started up the slope with both sides scrabbling about as the ball rattled between the various shins. Gradually the play settled down with both sides penetrating each other’s 18 yd box. On 20 minutes Ringmer won a free kick on their left mid way into the Sidley half. Louis Munnery took the kick quickly and chipped the ball into the edge of the 18 yard box where it was met by Kieran who flicked the ball over the advancing keeper (1-0).

The two teams shared possession for the next ten minutes until a weak clearance from the Ringmer defence found a loan Sidley striker who advanced rapidly on the Ringmer goal resulting in a one on one with Matt who produced a fine save to keep the Ringmer slate clean.

This was immediately followed by a disallowed goal from Ryan Betsworth which would have been fine if three players including Ryan had not been offside.

Five minutes before the break a Sidley corner from their right drifts to the far side of the Ringmer defence where it is headed back towards the near post and driven past the flailing Matt (1-1). This is not the first time that the Reserves have conceded a goal this season from this manoeuvre.

Unfortunately, immediately after the restart, Ringmer fail to deal with a direct ball which results in another goal for Sidley (1-2) with half time following shortly after.

Sidley restarted the second half with both sides playing scrappy football similar to the start of the first half with the only half chance falling to Ringmer.

David decided to make some changes, the first after eight minutes was to bring Chris Bates on into midfield and withdraw Ryan Moore. Four minutes later, Ryan Betsworth was replaced in a direct swap by Rob. Ryan had worked hard on his own up front and passed the captains armband to Jesse.

On the 60 min mark, Kieran is fouled, the resulting free kick finds Kieran in the 6 yard box to head his second of the match to even the scores (2-2).

This levelling of the scores was immediately undone when Sidley were allowed to break unchallenged down their left and finish with a goal (2-3).

A neat series of crisp interplay between Kieran and Rob opens up an opportunity for Kieran on the Sidley penalty spot however just as he pulled the trigger a trip unbalanced him with the resulting shot gathered by the Sidley keeper. Without advantage a penalty should have been awarded.

A further opportunity falls to Kieran on 75 minutes when Chris Bates fed a ball through to Ben Courtnage on the right whose weighted cross was met by the head of Kieran to unfortunately pass wide of the upright.

The last change is on 80 minutes when Lewis Clarkson is brought on for Lance. Ben Courtnage moves to right back and Lewis takes the right midfield slot. Lewis quickly gets into the action when he tried a distant shot from the left which passed over the Sidley crossbar.

Final score 2-3. Unfortunately Ringmer did not play to their best today and because of lapses were punished by a more mature Sidley line up.
