WEALDEN 2ND X1 1 – 1 RINGMER 2ND X1 RESERVE EAST DIVISION 04/09/09 Report by The Crouchies
This the third league match was always going to be a hard battle for all, Wealden in joint 1st place with Haywards Heath and Ringmer in second only on goal difference.
Ringmer started the attack straight away looking for an early goal, the first definable chance coming just four minutes in after some great build up play down the left between Louis Munnery & Louis Brown with Tim Johnson finally crossing the ball to Matt Little in front of goal but his knock went just wide. Wealdens first chance came five minutes later after a free kick 26 yds out on the right looked to be sailing into the top left of the Ringmer net but was safely plucked out of the air by Keeper Dan Davies.
Ringmer were putting together some good moves working the ball up field but were met by a good defence who constantly blocked, tackled and cleared the ball out for Ringmer to start the build up once again. Ryan Betsworth on 19 mins put a great cross in which found Robbie Frost who's shot was blocked and cleared, then Frost followed with another run in but again the shot was blocked. Wealden were having their chances to as they latched on to the long clearance ball causing Ringmer to chase back at times but they to had a good defence line and Wealden suffered the same frustration when it came to getting the ball in the net.
The see saw game went on but you got the impression that Ringmer had the edge and would score, this at last came in the 25 minute after another great passing move ending with Betsworth putting in a fine cross to find Frost again, who this time controls the ball well looses his defenders and successfully beats the keeper to give Ringmer the lead, 1-0.
Ringmer continue the pressure looking to gain another goal, Betsworth heads just over the bar from a cross from Brown, Frost with another run up the right beats defenders to get a cross in but the final shot is deflected for a corner. The last five minutes saw Wealden up the pressure and Ringmer had to start to defend a lot more and in a spell of non concentration from Ringmer, the home side put one away into the Ringmer net to draw level. 1-1 at the break.
The second half seemed to be a bit of a drab affair for the spectator after the excitement and good play in the first half. The play from both sides seemed to be slow and the game was not helped on by constant whistle blowing by the ref who I must say made some very strange decisions during this half, giving a decision yes, but getting it round the wrong way on more that one occasion!
Consequently there was not a lot to write home about during this half as we waited for either side to have a moment of inspiration and break the dead lock but the only nervous squeals came when either side made empty runs on goal. A few chances did come for both sides though, Ringmer's Frost picked up a through ball from midfield and went straight for goal unfortunately his shot was saved by the keeper, Alex Fleming who replaced Betsworth shoots on the turn but over the bar, Ryan Moore on for Matt Little crosses but goes over the bar. Meanwhile back at the Ringmer end similar action was taking place with the odd shot being saved or going wide.
By all accounts Ringmer should have won this match in the first half they had so many chances and seemed to be the better side but the home side did defend well and were stronger in the second half. The loss of momentum (constant stoppage) in the second half for Ringmer probably went against them as their flowing play became more staccato like. The match ended all level at 1-1.
