RINGMER 2ND X1 1 – 2 WESTFIELD 2ND X1 RESERVE SECTION EAST DIVISION 26/09/09 Report by Steve Frost
Ringmer should have sewn this game up in the first half however they did not get the rub of the green today, they made two mistakes which let Westfield have their only two shots on goal to score and take the points. Playing the offside card is always a lottery, particularly when half the team stop to appeal thereby gifting undeserving opportunities.
Westfield had the kick off with Ringmer playing up the hill. Ringmer had easily the best of the first half with wave after wave of attack on the Westfield defence with early chances falling to Rob Frost, Matt Little, Alex Fleming, Joe Dryer and Craig Olive. Despite these efforts few really tested the Westfield keeper who was surrounded by an experienced and wily defence offering him protection.
On 41 mins, Ringmer had a time warp moment when a good section of the side appeal for offside leaving the Ringmer goal largely unprotected and ripe for the picking (0-1).
Ryan Moore is subbed at 44 mins for an ankle injury sustained in the 25th; Ben Uher comes on at left back releasing Dryer into left midfield. Just before the half time whistle Fleming nearly beats the Westfield offside trap but the first half ends with a slightly bitter taste in the Ringmer mouths.
Two minutes after the restart Ringmer level the scores with a bundled effort finished by Olive after free kick from right delivered into the danger area by Dryer (1-1).
Ringmer still pushed forward and Westfield continued to get the breaks as Ringmer huffed and puffed but could not blow the Westfield defence down.
The only recordable events of this half are when Lewis Clarkson came on for Matt Ford on 64mins and later when John P O'Hara came on for Matt Little on 86mins. Between these two substitutions Ringmer did a rerun of the first half event with another gifted opportunity which Westfield gratefully took (1-2).
Ringmer grafted with some very hard work in many areas on what was a sapping day.
Unfortunately, Westfield did not win this game, Ringmer gave it to them.
