FA CUP EXTRA PRELIMINARY REPLAY

18/08/09

Report by David Ruffles

With a trip to Deal awaiting the winners of this FA Cup tie there was little to choose between the two sides for most of the first half but with both defences on top there were few shots on target.

The general opinion was that the side that scored first was the one most likely to go through into the next round. That goal arrived after eighteen minutes when goalkeeper Barry Marchena collided with Darren Lok as both men raced for the ball just inside Town’s penalty area and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot. David Altendorf coolly ignored the goal-line antics of Marchena as he placed the ball firmly into the net. Moments later the lead almost doubled as Lok forced Marchena into a diving save. However a free-kick from Luke Muldowney was almost deflected beyond the reach of Sean McFadden to remind the Blues that the job was not yet done. With half-time approaching Matt Percival eased Ringmer’s anxiety when he timed his run to perfection to send a powerfully header into the net from a corner kick by Kieran Patel.

Egham came out from the second half determined to get back into the game but apart from the threat from Charlie Muldowney up front they struggled to bother the home defence. Having survived the initial onslaught Ringmer gradually took control of the game to such an extent that for the last fifteen minutes they were virtually camped deep into the Egham half. Jo Jo Tubon, Altendorf and Kevin Barden all went close to extending the Blues lead during this period but in the end the Blues had to settle for a 2-0 victory while their supporters started looking at the map for the trip to Deal on 29th August.
