RINGMER 1STX1 2 – 0 DEAL TOWN 1ST X1 FA VASE PRELIMINARY ROUND 06/09/09 Report by David Ruffles
What a difference a week made as Ringmer exacted revenge for last week’s FA Cup defeat at Deal with a convincing display on Saturday in the FA Vase against a side showing only one change from the victorious line-up.
Right from the kick off the Blues launch a wave of attacks with Ollie Rowe’s header cleared off the goal line by a defender the pick of the early chances. Then on fifteen minutes Mark Price’s free kick seemed destined for the top corner of the net before Paul Rogers in Town’s goal somehow managed to palm the ball over the crossbar. Further chances fell to Jon Marzetti and David Altendorf before Mo Takaloo’s free kick when inches wide of the Ringmer goal. Then after thirty minutes, Ringmer got the reward from an outstanding display of attacking football. A corner from the right by Price found Marzetti out wide on the left. His cross back into the penalty area was met by the advancing Price whose shot was blocked on the goal-line. However Sam Sowter was on hand to blast the ball into the net to put the Blues in front.
The first attack of the second half saw goalkeeper Sean McFadden injured for the second successive game – this time with a rib injury which severely limited his mobility. Seeking to take advantage of his handicap the visitors adopted a shoot on sight policy. However Ringmer’s central defensive pairing of Jayson Sowter and Rowe kept a tight rein on Deal’s strikers so that most shots were way off target. During this spell of pressure Ringmer’s main outlet was Jo Jo Tubon. He had one shot blocked by the keeper who also blocked a follow-up shot from Craig Brown. Then a cross from Tubon fell invitingly for Sam Sowter and his shot was stopped at the second attempt by Paul Rogers in goal for the visitors. With twenty minutes left to play a fine run from midfield by Alex Mikolay ended with a cross for which Kevin Barden was ideally placed to slide the ball home to give the Blues the cushion of a second goal. Ten minutes later Rogers did well to block another shot from Barden. Moments later McFadden, who was still troubled by his injury, left the field with Sam Sowter donning the keeper’s jersey for the second time in a week. In the closing stages both sides missed chances to score but in the end Ringmer had done enough to progress into the next round at the first attempt.
