RINGMER 2 – 1 SIDLEY UNITED

John O’Hara League Challenge Cup

25/08/09

Report by David Ruffles

Ringmer made hard work of beating Division 2 side Sidley Utd in this John O’Hara League Challenge Cup tie. The visitors took an early lead with a goal straight from the kick off. No Ringmer player touched the ball as Kenny Pogue ran straight into the penalty area before firing home beyond the reach of Sean McFadden. Five minutes later the same player almost doubled Sidley’s lead but this time his strike went just over the Blues goal.

After this shock start Ringmer gradually settled to their task and they drew level after twenty seven minutes when Sam Sowter shrugged off the attention of his marker and the advancing goal keeper to slip the ball into the bottom corner of the net. Ten minutes later Sowter nearly put the Blues in front only to see his chip go inches over the bar. The second half saw both sides struggling with the off-side trap but the Sidley front men of Pogue and Chris Honey continued to keep the Blues defence on their toes with Pogue having one shot saved by McFadden and another cleared off the line by Ryan MacMillan. Then in the fourth and final minute of time added on, and extra-time beckoning, a cross from the left flank flew across the visitor’s penalty area where Matt Ford was lurking to fire the ball into the net to earn Ringmer a trip to Mile Oak or Little Common in the second round.
