EASTBOURNE UA U18 1 - 0 RINGMER U18 SCL YOUTH EAST DIVISION 25/10/09 Report by Brian Henderson
Ringmer traveled the short distance to Eastbourne this Sunday to play the reverse fixture at Eastbourne United’s ground.
As is now usual there were changes with Tom Marchant in goal, Ben Courtnage in midfield and James Kite up front with Jordan Allen. The pitch at Eastbourne is not the best and is very lumpy which does not suit our style of play and it was very windy. We played the first half against the wind in the hope of keeping the score at least level, if not in front, and then using the conditions to our advantage in the second half.
Play was scrappy and we struggled to get control of the ball and Eastbourne were using the over the top pass and running onto the ball. Then on 10 minutes Eastbourne won a corner which we failed to clear and they scored. This spurred them on and for the first 25 minutes we had our backs to the wall. Slowly we started to challenge more and began to create one or two chances that their keeper had to save but at half time we were still a goal behind.
The half time talk discussed using the wind to our advantage by playing the ball through to our forwards to use their speed and to get an early goal. This plan never worked because we were second best in most departments. Todd Hammond was replaced by Joe Seymour on 55 minutes at left back, Gavin Lanius for Kite on 63 minutes and Jordan Lee on for Charlie Miles on 67 minutes. Although we were at least competing we did not test their keeper enough and when we did get the ball into the back of the net on 71 minutes the goal was disallowed. Eastbourne kept coming forward and created several chances late on, one stopped by a great save from Tom and another goal line clearance by Joe. The result was a 1-0 defeat This was one of the worst performances by the team and it would be easy to blame the pitch and the weather but overall Eastbourne deserved the victory.
