Match Team and Report

Ringmer U18 1 – 1 Hastings Utd U18

SCFY East Division

28/03/10

Report by Brian Henderson

All change this week following the resignation of the team manger Kevin Allen following the defeat last Thursday evening. Dave Miller has taken the job for the remaining 5 matches. His first game was against Hastings Utd who are currently 4th in the league. Phil was back in goal and Ben Thompsett was partnered in the centre of defence by Ben Gardiner with Jake Allen at right back and Louis Brown up front on the left with Kieran Ridley in the centre and Lewis Finney with a free role.

The game started fairly evenly with very few chances being created in the opening 20 minutes by either team but then on 21 minutes there was good link up play by Ben Courtnage who fed Louis Brown but his cross was wayward. Then a couple of minutes later Phil made a great save from a powerful header. Ringmer then scored a goal on 35 minutes when Taylor Briggs sent over apinpoint cross that was met by Ben Courtnage who headed in past the keeper.Ringmer were on top now and further chances came through a Lewis Finney shot on 40 mins and a header by same player from a good cross by Louis Brown. A minute from half time Joe Seymour was substituted because of injury and was replaced by Jordan Allen. The half time score was 1-0 to Ringmer.

The team talk was very positive but changes of player’s positions were made to maintain the advantage and to see how Hastings would play now that they were kicking down the slope.

Ringmer kept up the pressure and created several very good chances. The first was a great through ball by Ben Courtnage to Jordan Allen who, after doing all the difficult work, shot wide. Hastings hit back and only another save from Phil kept our narrow lead. Then from the resulting corner the ball was cleared off the line by Jake Allen. Ringmer cleared the ball up field and a shot from Taylor was saved and almost immediately following pressure from Ben Courtnage, the ball was played to Jordan whose shot went wide.

Hastings then raised their game and pushed Ringmer deep into their own half and were rewarded with a goal on 65 minutes by way of a header. The game was now being evenly contested and

Chris Bates had a good shot saved and a couple of minutes later Hastings shot narrowly wide and then forced another good save from Phil. Following good link up play from Jordan Allen the ball was played to Ben Courtnage who, one on one with the keeper, allowed him to smother his effort.

There was time for one last effort from Louis Brown but his shot went over the cross bar. The result was probably a fair one taking the missed chances and saves from both teams into account but I am sure that Ringmer were the more satisfied of the two teams.

A comment should be made about the referee. He kept total control of the game and allowed both teams to play football and it was a pleasure to have someone who explained decisions to the players whilst maintaining his authority.
