REPORT OF THE DENNIS PROBEE YOUTH CUP AGAINST HORSHAM ON THURSDAY 03/12/09

RINGMER U18 V HORSHAM U18

THE DENNIS PROBEE YOUTH CUP

03/12/09

Report by Brian Henderson

After three weeks without a game, because of the wet weather, the team played Horsham in the third round of this cup on Thursday evening. Congratulations should first be given to our grounds man Dave Millar, for the Stirling efforts to get the pitch playable and although wet the playing surface held up reasonably well.

The game started in dry cold conditions and for the first 15 to 20 minutes it was Horsham who dominated play. Ringmer’s play was disjointed and the ball was given away too easily, this partly because of lack of football and also the pressure play from Horsham. Phil McDonald in goal was called into action several times to make important saves.

Ringmer did manage to create a chance after 10 minutes following a through ball by Jordan Lee but the keeper saved the effort. Horsham continued to press forward and varied their attack, sometimes releasing a long ball for their forwards to chase and other times playing short, quick passes through their midfield. Their first goal came on 20 minutes, a quick attack resulted in a shot from their left side which, from our view, Phil had covered but the ball deflected of a defenders heel, changing the flight and eluding Phil. A couple of minutes later Horsham had another chance which they squandered.

Their second goal came on the 35 minute mark following a good through ball.

However, Ringmer scored a very good goal a couple of minutes later. Jake Allen, from his own half, sent a very good ball over the Horsham midfield player and Ben Courtnage collected it and took the ball to the by-line and sent over a great cross that was met by Jordan Allen to score with a very good header.

Game on now and although Horsham continued to press forward there was no further score by half time. Phil in goal had made many good saves and even the Horsham bench were impressed. The team talk was positive and the team was told to keep play tight for the first 10 to 15 minutes to see how Horsham would play down the slope.

This plan was blown apart within the first 3 minutes. Horsham scored after just 13 seconds of the restart. A mistake in defence by two players presented a gift that the forward did not pass up. Within another minute Phil, who had been so good in the first half, dropped the ball and again the grateful forward scored. Ringmer were shaken at this turn around and Horsham dominated but to their credit Ringmer came back into the game through sheer effort. Then on 57 minutes Phil took a weak goal kick, up the slope, that fell to a Horsham forward who gratefully scored.

There was a double substitution after 65 minutes when Louis Brown and S Hammond replaced K Lambert and T Hammond and on 70 minutes J Seymour replaced N Gershek. Ringmer tried to press and did create several half chances but it was Horsham who scored again on 80 minutes to make the final score 6-1.

Ringmer players can take some comfort in that they were playing a very good team from the Ryeman league and did manage to come back into the game in the first half. However several of the goals were self inflicted and no team can afford to make silly mistakes and expect to win games. If the players have learned from this match then hopefully they can use lessons learned to play more consistently and win forthcoming games.
