Ringmer U18 verses Seaford U18 ON Thursday 11/03/10

RINGMER U18 1 – 1 SEAFORD U18

SCFY EAST DIVISION

11/03/10

Report by Brian Henderson

We finally got to play our first match since the 24th January against our local rivals Seaford. They had beaten Bexhill last Sunday so were on a bit of a roll whereas we were likely to be a bit match rusty.

The team chosen was a strong one although there were a couple of players missing, the most obvious one being our captain Jordan Lee because of his broken leg, although he did come to watch his team mates. Jordan Allen was suspended and a debut was made by Ben Gardner in defence.

The pitch was in a good state considering the battering from the weather and because of the hard work by Dave our grounds man and the weather was benign.

Ringmer kicked off down the slope first half and it was Seaford who settled more quickly in the opening stages. However slowly Ringmer started to play the ball on the ground and pressed Seaford back. Then in the 19th minute Taylor had a one to one with the keeper who saved his effort and from the resulting corner the header was cleared off the line.

Then on 23 minutes Ben Courtnage had a one to one and brought out a good save from their keeper. A couple of minutes later Lewis Finney shot wide, then on 29 minutes Taylor brought out another good save from their keeper. Ringmer kept pressing and Seaford were just playing the ball up the slope but Phil in goal had little to do. Ben Coutnage shot wide on 37 minutes then just before half time Chris Bates unleashed a cracking shot on the turn but the Seaford keeper made a great save to keep the score level at half time 0-0.

The half time talk was very positive because the team had done everything but score. We expected Seaford to press more now they were playing down hill and we had to keep playing and moving the ball on the ground.

The second half followed the pattern of the first with further efforts on goal failing to score that vital goal which finally came on 58 minutes. Following good approach play Taylor sent a cross over that was met by Lewis Finney to score a great goal. We had finally got our noses in front but to their credit Seaford came back strongly into the game.

Our cause was not helped by forced substitutions because of injuries. Chris Bates picked up an ankle injury and Kris Lambert had blurred vision and they were replaced by Joe Seymour and Jake Allen who was himself substituted by Harry Stewart late in the game.

The final 10 minutes saw Ringmer lose their shape and discipline and the game got disjointed. With only 1 minute left Seaford sent in a long speculative ball that drifted over Phil in goal to allow Seaford to equalize. The referee was very good, he was consistent and allowed play to flow where possible and was always in control of the game.

This was another game where our lack of converting goal scoring chances resulted in another 2 points dropped.
